MELBOURNE - Feb 28/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough extends from central Australia to the far southern New South Wales coast,. The trough will move slowly northwards, reaching the southern interior of Queensland late this week. Another surface trough extends over Torres Strait and will move south onto Cape York Peninsula on Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the east tropical coast and adjacent inland north of about Bowen with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls. Isolated showers elsewhere northeast of about Longreach to Brisbane. Isolated showers and thunderstorms west of about Longreach to Thargomindah, increasing to scattered in the far west. Fine over the remainder of the southern interior. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds, tending N to NE in the southwest. Forecast for Wednesday Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the east tropical coast and adjacent inland north of about Ayr, with showers increasing to rain at times and some moderate to possibly locally heavy falls. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over northern Queensland and the far west, increasing to scattered in the afternoon. Isolated showers on the central coast and adjacent inland, tending scattered with possible isolated thunderstorms north of about Mackay. Fine over the remainder of the state apart from isolated light showers northeast of Emerald to Brisbane and through the far southern interior. Light to moderate E to NE winds over the northern half of the state, fresh at times along the east coast. Moderate NW to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times in the southwest. Forecast for Thursday An upper level trough will move east over southeastern Australia, while a surface trough will persist to the southwest of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur in the moist N to NW wind flow ahead of the surface trough over western districts and into the southern interior, with some rain areas developing through the far southwest. The surface trough over Cape York Peninsula will remain slow moving, with scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, more widespread with possible rain areas about the coast and adjacent inland north of about Ingham. Isolated showers will occur northeast of about Emerald to the Sunshine Coast. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere. Forecast for Friday The surface trough to the southwest of the state will most likely move north into the far southern Channel Country, extending a cloud band with scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms through southwestern parts of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist through the tropics north of about Cairns and through northwestern Queensland. Isolated showers are expected over the remaining coast north of about Fraser Island, with late thunderstorms possible for coastal and adjacent inland parts north of St Lawrence. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough will most likely move a little further northeast, with the coastal section approaching southern Queensland waters. Showers should develop on the Gold Coast and the southern border ranges as the trough approaches. Conditions should be fine elsewhere over the southeast apart from the chance of isolated showers on Fraser Island. Scattered shower and thunderstorm activity will continue through far western parts of the state, more widespread with rain areas in the southwest. A trough in the Coral Sea will move westwards towards the east tropical coast, enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity along the coast and adjacent inland north of about St Lawrence. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will occur elsewhere through the tropics. Fine conditions are expected over the remainder. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The surface trough extending through far southern Queensland will most likely move further eastwards, gradually extending a SE wind change through southern Queensland waters. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected over southern Queensland, most widespread near the surface trough. The trough in the Coral Sea should move on to the east tropical coast, extending a deep, moist E'ly wind flow and showers and thunderstorms into much of northeastern and central Queensland.
