MELBOURNE - Feb 27/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along most of the east coast of Queensland. The ridge will gradually weaken during the forecast period. A surface trough will extend from central Australia to the southern New South Wales coast tomorrow. The trough will move only slowly northwards and is not expected to move in to the southern interior of Queensland until late in the week. A deep, moist E to NE wind flow will persist over much of the east tropical coast during this week. Forecast for the rest of Monday Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the east tropical coast and adjacent inland between about Cooktown and Carmila with some moderate to locally heavy falls. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the tropics and through far western Queensland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere west of about Emerald to Cunnamulla. Fine in the southeast interior. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds. Forecast for Tuesday Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the east tropical coast and adjacent inland north of about Mackay with moderate to locally heavy falls. Isolated showers elsewhere east of about Emerald to Stanthorpe, scattered during the morning about the coast and ranges with some drizzle areas. Isolated showers and thunderstorms west of about Longreach to Thargomindah, increasing to scattered in the northwest. Fine over the remainder of the southern interior. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds, tending N to NE in the southwest. Forecast for Wednesday The high in the Tasman Sea and the associated ridge along the east Queensland coast will continue to weaken. A trough will move south through Torres Strait on to far northern Cape York Peninsula. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will persist throughout the tropics in the deep E to NE wind flow to the south of the trough, with shower activity possibly increasing to rain at times along the east tropical coast and adjacent inland north of about Ayr. Isolated showers will occur along the remaining east coast north of Fraser Island. A surface trough to the southwest of the state will maintain unstable conditions and produce scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms through far western parts of the state. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere. Forecast for Thursday An upper level trough will move east over southeastern Australia, while a surface trough will persist to the southwest of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist in the moist N to NW flow ahead of the surface trough over western districts west of Longreach and the Gulf Country. The surface trough over Cape York Peninsula will remain slow moving, with scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, more widespread with possible rain areas about the coast and adjacent inland north of about Townsville. Isolated showers will occur northeast of about Emerald to the Sunshine Coast. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere. Forecast for Friday The surface trough to the southwest of the state will most likely move north into the far southern Channel Country, extending a cloud band with scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms through southwestern parts of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist through the tropics north of about Cardwell and through northwestern Queensland. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected over the remaining coast and adjacent inland north of about Gladstone. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere apart from isolated showers on the Fraser coast. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The surface trough in the southwest of the state will most likely remain near stationary or move only slowly northeast. A trough in the Coral Sea will most likely move west towards the east tropical coast. Showers and thunderstorms will therefore occur over much of eastern Queensland, particularly north of Fraser Island, and may become more widespread with rain areas on the tropical coast as the Coral Sea trough shifts west. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should occur through the interior, more widespread near the surface trough in the west. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
