A ridge along the southern and central coast of Queensland will firm and spread northwards over the next few days as the high over the Tasman Sea strengthens. A surface trough is located off the far southern coast of Queensland and is moving westwards. The trough will move onto the coast tonight. Forecast for the rest of Friday Cloudy with rain areas and local thunder over the south-east corner where some moderate to heavy falls. Showers and thunderstorms will occur in most remaining areas of the state and will tend to scattered over the far west and in eastern districts. Fine conditions over the southern interior and parts of the central interior. Winds will be mostly light to moderate SE to NE becoming fresh and gusty at times along parts of the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The upper low over south-east Queensland will move into New South Wales while the surface trough will decay. Consequently, cloudy conditions with rain and local thunder over the south-east corner will continue, with further moderate to heavy falls during the morning. This activity will ease to showers by late in the day. Showers and thunderstorms will continue in most remaining areas of the state and again will be only isolated over central areas. The ridge along the east coast will continue to firm and will maintain moderate to fresh SE winds in most east coast districts. Forecast for Sunday The high over the Tasman sea will maintain the ridge along the east and will direct moderate to fresh SE winds into most east coast districts. Conditions will begin to dry over the south-east of the state so only a few showers will occur, mainly about the coast. Elsewhere, over the state showers and storms will continue in the moist air mass. Forecast for Monday Ridging will persist along most of the east coast with drying winds continuing across most of the south-east and central areas of the state. So fine conditions will occur over these inland areas. Moderate to fresh SE winds will continue along most of the east coast and direct only isolated showers onto the southern coast. About much of the east tropical coast south of Cooktown the showers will be more scattered and tend to rain at times about the north tropical coast. Some moderate to heavy falls may occur in this area. Generally isolated showers and storms will occur over the remainder of the state. Forecast for Tuesday The ridge along the east coast will begin to weaken as the high over the Tasman Sea loses strength. A new frontal system will move into south-eastern Australia. Isolated showers will continue along the southern coast and will become scattered about the east tropical coast south of Cooktown. These showers will again tend to rain at times about the north tropical coast where some moderate to heavy falls. Isolated showers and storms will continue over the far north and far west of the state. Fine conditions will continue over the south-east, southern and central interior of the state. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The ridge along the east coast will continue to weaken and move northwards. The frontal system will move northwards into inland Queensland on Wednesday while the coastal section will move onto the southern coast on Thursday. As a result fresh SE winds will develop along the southern coast and merge with and reinforce the preexisting SE airflow. Showers and storms will develop over most southern inland districts, triggered by the surface front. Over the far north and north-west of the state showers and storms will continue. Showers, mostly isolated, will continue along most of the remainder of the east coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
