MELBOURNE - Feb 23/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Severe Weather Warning for the Southeast Coast, Wide Bay and Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. A Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters between Yeppoon and Point Danger. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation An upper level trough extended across southern Queensland with an upper low near the Northern Territory border, and a second upper low developing over southeast Queensland. A ridge on the southern Queensland coast will strengthen and extend northwards along the east coast over the next few days as the high over the Tasman Sea strengthens. A surface trough is located off the far southern coast of Queensland and moving west towards the coast. Forecast for the rest of Friday Cloudy with scattered showers increasing to rain areas and local thunder over the southeast corner. Some moderate to heavy falls will develop in the evening especially about the southeast coast. Showers and thunderstorms are likely in most remaining areas of the state, and will tend to be scattered over the far west and eastern districts. Fine conditions over the central southern interior. Winds will be mostly light to moderate SE to NE, tending fresh and gusty at times along parts of the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The upper low over southeast Queensland will move westwards, while the surface trough will move inland. Consequently, cloudy conditions with rain and local thunder over the southeast corner will continue, with further moderate to heavy falls about the southeast coast, before easing and contracting west late in the day. Showers and thunderstorms in most remaining areas of the state, more isolated over central areas. The ridge along the east coast will continue to strengthen and will maintain moderate to fresh SE winds in most east coast districts. Forecast for Sunday The high over the Tasman sea will maintain the ridge along the east and will direct moderate to fresh SE winds into most east coast districts. Conditions will begin to dry over the southeast of the state so only a few showers will occur, mainly about the coast. Elsewhere, over the state showers and storms will continue in the moist air mass. Forecast for Monday Ridging will persist along most of the east coast with drying winds continuing across most of the southeast and central areas of the state. Moderate to fresh SE winds will continue along most of the east coast and direct only isolated showers onto the southern and central coast. Fine conditions will develop over most of the southeast inland and the southern and central interior. Generally isolated showers and storms will occur over the remainder of the state. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The ridge will persist along most of the east coast until at least Thursday. A surface trough will move into the southwest of the state on Wednesday and then become near stationary. So isolated showers will continue along much of the east coast but will increase to at least scattered with some rain areas about the North Tropical Coast. Some moderate to heavy falls will occur in this area. Showers and storms, mostly isolated, will occur near the surface trough and this activity will merge with seasonal shower and storms activity about the Gulf of Carpentaria and over the far north of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday. Weather & WarningsAustraliaNew South WalesVictoriaQueenslandWarnings SummaryForecastsBrisbane ForecastQld.
