Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 19/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and
streams.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weakening ridge extends along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level
trough will move further offshore of the southeast coast this evening. Another
upper trough will move into far southwestern Queensland on Monday. A surface
trough will also enter southwestern Queensland during Monday. A deep, moist E to
NE wind flow extends over the far northern tropics.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northeast tropics. Isolated
showers over the remaining east coast and adjacent inland with isolated
thunderstorms, particularly on the ranges. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
near the southern Gulf coast. Isolated gusty showers and thunderstorms over the
southern interior though with little or no rain. Fine over the remainder apart
from possible isolated light showers on the Carnarvon ranges. Light to moderate
SE to NE winds, fresh at times along the east tropical coast.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated afternoon and evening showers and gusty thunderstorms over the
southern and southeast interior. Cloud increasing in the southwest with patchy
light rain developing. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northern
tropics, mostly near the coast at first and developing inland during the
afternoon. More isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the far
northwest of the state and along the southern tropical and central coasts and
adjacent inland. Fine elsewhere. Warm to hot maximum temperatures over southern
and central Queensland with moderate NW to NE winds, fresh at times along the
southern coast. A cooler SE change will move onto the southern inland border
during the day. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics, fresh at
times near the coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level trough will move eastwards into southeastern Queensland,
greatly increasing instability. A surface trough is expected to move north along
the southern coast during the day. This will result in showers and thunderstorms
developing over southeastern Queensland and extending into central districts and
the southern interior south of about Longreach to Gladstone during the day.
Mostly fine conditions are expected elsewhere over central districts and
northwestern Queensland with only isolated showers and possible thunderstorms.
Some high cloud will produce patchy light rain and possible isolated
thunderstorms over the southwest. Widespread showers and thunderstorms will
continue through the northeast tropics. Maximum temperatures will remain above
average over much of the state.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough will most likely weaken near the Fraser Coast, with a
general SE to NE wind flow extending along the east coast. The upper trough will
contract off the southeast coast, while a new upper trough will most likely
intensify as it moves into southern Queensland. This new trough will thicken a
cloud band over much of southern Queensland, resulting in rain areas, showers
and thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms will continue through the northern
tropics in the deep E to NE wind flow. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are
expected through central districts north of Emerald and the southern
tropics.
Forecast for Thursday
Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the upper trough but at this
stage the most likely scenario is for it to remain slow moving and intensify
further near southwestern Queensland. Unstable conditions will persist over much
of the state under this scenario, and should combine with a moist SE to NE wind
flow to produce fairly widespread showers and thunderstorms.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The new upper trough will most likely remain slow moving near southwestern
Queensland. This will result in a band of showers, rain areas and thunderstorms
from the tropics into the interior to the east of the trough. The heaviest rain
areas depend greatly on the position and movement of the upper trough, and this
will be refined in the days ahead. A moist onshore wind flow should also develop
to some depth along much of the remaining east coast of Queensland, resulting in
isolated showers and thunderstorms.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
