Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 13/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and
streams.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weakening surface trough extends over the southeast interior. An upper
level trough lies near the southeast coast and is expected to move offshore into
the Coral Sea during today. A high will move into the Tasman Sea today, building
a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southeast, particularly on the
ranges. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southern central interior,
the Wide Bay and Burnett and southern Capricornia, mostly during the afternoon
and evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over remaining eastern districts
and through the northern tropics, particularly through the northern Peninsula
and on the tropical coast and adjacent inland south of Cairns. Moderate S to SE
winds along the east coast, freshening during the day. Light to moderate SE to
NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough should begin to retreat westwards as surface pressures
rise along the east coast with the development of a ridge. This will allow low
level moist air to spread westwards into the interior, with isolated showers and
thunderstorms developing east of about Burketown to Cunnamulla and increasing to
scattered south of Longreach in the afternoon. Scattered showers on the Sunshine
and Fraser coasts should ease to isolated during the day, with mostly fine
conditions elsewhere in the southeast. A trough in the easterly flow over the
northern Coral Sea will move westwards, and may increase shower and thunderstorm
activity about the east coast between Cairns and Sarina, with rain areas and
storms likely over northern Cape York Peninsula.
Forecast for Thursday
The trough over the Coral Sea will move slowly westwards, enhancing the
southeasterly flow and shower and thunderstorm activity further along the east
tropical and central coasts. Isolated showers are expected elsewhere along the
east coast and adjacent inland, possibly becoming more scattered through the
southeast coast during the afternoon. The inland trough will continue to drift
slowly westwards to lie from about Mt Isa to Cunnamulla, with isolated showers
and thunderstorms developing to its east during the afternoon and evening,
particularly over areas south of Longreach.
Forecast for Friday
A surface trough should remain over the state's interior, and the relatively
humid air flow into it should produce mainly isolated showers and thunderstorms
over central districts and the southern interior. The Coral Sea trough will most
likely continue to drift west, with areas of rain, showers and thunderstorms
expected over the Peninsula and the eastern tropics north of about Mackay.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
A weak ridge is expected to build over the state's interior during the
outlook period, resulting in mainly fine conditions through the interior. The
continuing influence of the Coral Sea trough should maintain rain areas,
widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms along the east tropical coast,
central coast and adjacent inland. Mainly fine conditions will continue about
the remaining eastern districts, with just some isolated showers near the coast
and southern border ranges.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
