Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 11/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A slow moving surface trough extends over the interior of the state, with
moist SE to NE winds to its east and dry S'ly winds to its west. A weak ridge
extends along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level trough is approaching
the southwest Queensland border and is expected to move east into the Queensland
interior today. The monsoon trough is weak and lies to the north of
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms east of about Normanton to Goondiwindi,
increasing to scattered through the northern Peninsula district and also over
southeast inland parts this afternoon and evening. Fine in the west with a cool
morning. Light to moderate SW to SE winds in the west, tending SE to NE in the
east.
Forecast for Monday
The upper level trough will move eastwards into eastern Queensland. Isolated
showers and storms will continue over areas east of Normanton to Goondiwindi and
increase to scattered about the southeast in the afternoon as the upper trough
approaches. Fine conditions will continue in the west.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper level trough will move offshore of the southeast Queensland coast
during the day. A surface trough and an associated S'ly wind change will most
likely move north from New South Wales into southern Queensland waters. A high
in the Tasman Sea will then extend a strengthening ridge along the east coast
late in the day, freshening SE winds over remaining waters. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will continue over the southeast and through the northern
Peninsula, while more isolated shower and thunderstorm activity will continue
through remaining eastern and northern parts of the state. Fine conditions will
persist in the west.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough over the eastern inland will begin to retreat westwards as
surface pressures rise along the east coast with the development of a ridge.
This will allow low level moist air to spread westwards into the interior, with
isolated showers and thunderstorms developing east of about Burketown to
Cunnamulla. Conditions should become mostly fine through the southeast due to
the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers expected. A deep trough in
the easterly flow over the northern Coral Sea will move westwards, and may
produce an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity about the east coast
north of Rockhampton.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The inland trough will continue to retreat west during the outlook period as
the ridge maintains itself along the east coast. This will spread moisture into
western districts, with the development of showers and thunderstorms, although
stabilising middle levels will tend to limit this activity by Friday and the
weekend. The continuing influence of the Coral Sea trough should maintain
widespread showers and a few thunderstorms along the tropical east and central
coasts. Only isolated showers are expected over the southern Queensland
coast.
