MELBOURNE - Feb 10/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving surface trough extends over the interior of the state, with moist SE to NE winds to its east and dry S'ly winds to its west. A weak ridge extends along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level trough extends into southwest Queensland and will move east over the southern inland border early Saturday before slipping southeast. The monsoon trough lies to the north of Australia. Forecast for the rest of Friday Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern and eastern tropics. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over central districts [mostly inland] and through the southeast interior. Mostly fine over the Southeast Coast and Wide Bay and Burnett districts with only isolated showers in the far west. Moderate SW to SE winds in the west. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds along the southern Queensland coast. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Saturday Fine west of Normanton to St George. Showers and thunderstorms over the far northern tropics, mostly during the afternoon. Early patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast interior and far southern Central Highlands, tending to showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over remaining areas, mostly inland and during the afternoon. Light to moderate SW to SE winds in the west, tending SE to NE in the east. Forecast for Sunday Another upper level trough will move into western Queensland, maintaining unstable conditions through the eastern half of the state. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will therefore occur through areas east of about Normanton to St George while fine conditions will continue to the west in a dry S'ly wind flow. Forecast for Monday The upper level trough will move eastwards into eastern Queensland. Isolated showers and storms will continue over areas east of Normanton to St George and increase to scattered about the southeast in the afternoon as the upper trough approaches. Fine conditions will continue in the west. Forecast for Tuesday The upper level trough will most likely persist over southeast Queensland while a surface trough should move north from New South Wales into southern Queensland waters. Showers and possible thunderstorms will continue over the southeast, while more isolated shower and thunderstorm activity will continue through remaining eastern and northern parts of the state. Fine conditions will persist in the west. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The inland trough will retreat west during the outlook period in response to a strengthening ridge along the east Queensland coast. This will spread moisture into western districts, with the development of isolated showers and thunderstorms also assisted by an approaching upper level trough. Conditions should become mostly fine through the southeast due to the influence of the ridge with only isolated showers expected. Elsewhere over the east coast, SE winds will freshen and result in increasing showers near the coast. These showers should be further enhanced with possible thunderstorms due to a trough moving westwards across the Coral Sea. This increase in weather is particularly expected about the east tropical coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
