Weather Situation
An upper level trough lies over western Queensland and extends a rain band
through the central and southern interior. The upper trough is expected to
weaken as it moves east into southeast districts on Friday. A surface trough
extends from a monsoon low over the Peninsula district, through the interior to
the Maranoa district. The monsoon low is expected to move east into the Coral
Sea near Cairns early Friday. The low has some chance of development over the
Coral Sea late Friday or over the weekend but will move east southeast further
away from the Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Rain areas and squally showers and thunderstorms over the tropics north of
Cooktown. Cloudy with rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms in a band
from the northwest of the state into the central and southern interior with some
locally heavy falls, particularly over the southern interior. Showers and
thunderstorms over the remaining eastern tropics and through central districts
north of Clermont, increasing to rain at times near the coast. Mostly fine in
the southeast with only isolated showers and drizzle areas. Fine in the far
west. Fresh to strong and gusty W to NW winds over the far northern tropics.
Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in the west. Light to moderate SE to NE winds
elsewhere, fresh at times near the coast.
Forecast for Friday
Squally showers and storms with possible damaging wind gusts north of Cairns,
easing from the west during the day. Rain areas and thunderstorms over the
remaining tropics and through the interior northeast of Longreach with some
moderate to heavy falls. Rain easing to showers over the southern interior from
the west during the morning. Some possible heavy falls early morning. High cloud
increasing over the southeast though with only isolated showers and patchy light
rain expected. Fine conditions in the west. Cool maximum temperatures over much
of the southern and central interior. Moderate to fresh W to SW winds over the
northern tropics, strong and gusty at times in the far north. Moderate S'ly
winds in the west. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times near the
coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The low offshore of the northeast tropical coast is expected to move further
east southeast over the Coral Sea. The low will extend a trough back to the
Queensland tropics near Cairns, with rain areas and thunderstorms occurring over
the east tropical coast and adjacent inland to its south. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will continue through the northern tropics. The upper level trough
over southern Queensland will finally contract off the southeast coast, with
only showers expected through the central and southern interior east of about
Longreach to Cunnamulla. Mostly fine conditions will continue over the southeast
with only isolated light showers. Fine conditions will continue in the west.
Forecast for Sunday
A new surface trough will enter western Queensland, though conditions will
remain fine over much of the state. Another trough will extend from the central
Queensland coast to the low moving east southeast over the Coral Sea. Scattered
showers and possible isolated storms are expected through central districts in
the moist and unstable wind flow into the trough. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will also occur through the northern tropics. Mostly fine
conditions will continue through the southern interior and southeast with only
isolated showers, mostly inland.
Forecast for Monday
The new surface trough will move east over the interior of the state while a
new upper level trough will most likely approach the western border. Showers and
thunderstorms will occur through the tropics and northwest Queensland in a moist
and unstable airmass. Showers and possible isolated thunderstorms are expected
over central districts east of Emerald and the Wide Bay due to instability
associated with the inland surface trough. Mostly fine conditions will occur
over elsewhere over central and southern Queensland with only isolated showers
and possible thunderstorms.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A weak monsoon trough will most likely develop once again over the Peninsula
district during the outlook period, with rain areas, showers and isolated
thunderstorms occurring over much of the Queensland tropics. The new upper level
trough will move rapidly east over the state on Tuesday, generating showers and
isolated thunderstorms over central and southern districts. A surface trough
will most likely deepen over the Queensland interior from Wednesday, producing a
band of showers and thunderstorms from the southern tropical coast into the
central and southern interior. S'ly winds will most likely increase along the
southern Queensland coast during the outlook period, with isolated showers and
possible thunderstorms expected over southeast districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
