MELBOURNE - Feb 2/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for Heavy Rain for parts of the Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Maranoa and Warrego forecast districts. A Wind Warning is current for eastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of Kowanyama. A Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Cape Tribulation and Townsville to St Lawrence. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation An upper level trough lies over western Queensland and extends a rain band through the central and southern interior. The upper trough is expected to weaken as it moves east into southeast districts on Friday. A surface trough extends from a monsoon low over the Peninsula district, through the interior to the Maranoa district. The monsoon low is expected to move east into the Coral Sea near Cairns early Friday. The low has some chance of development over the Coral Sea late Friday or over the weekend but will move east southeast further away from the Queensland coast. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Rain areas and squally showers and thunderstorms over the tropics north of Cooktown. Cloudy with rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms in a band from the northwest of the state into the central and southern interior with some locally heavy falls, particularly over the southern interior. Showers and thunderstorms over the remaining eastern tropics and through central districts north of Clermont, increasing to rain at times near the coast. Mostly fine in the southeast with only isolated showers and drizzle areas. Fine in the far west. Fresh to strong and gusty W to NW winds over the far northern tropics. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in the west. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times near the coast. Forecast for Friday Squally showers and storms with possible damaging wind gusts north of Cairns, easing from the west during the day. Rain areas and thunderstorms over the remaining tropics and through the interior northeast of Longreach with some moderate to heavy falls. Rain easing to showers over the southern interior from the west during the morning. Some possible heavy falls early morning. High cloud increasing over the southeast though with only isolated showers and patchy light rain expected. Fine conditions in the west. Cool maximum temperatures over much of the southern and central interior. Moderate to fresh W to SW winds over the northern tropics, strong and gusty at times in the far north. Moderate S'ly winds in the west. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times near the coast. Forecast for Saturday The low offshore of the northeast tropical coast is expected to move further east southeast over the Coral Sea. The low will extend a trough back to the Queensland tropics near Cairns, with rain areas and thunderstorms occurring over the east tropical coast and adjacent inland to its south. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through the northern tropics. The upper level trough over southern Queensland will finally contract off the southeast coast, with only showers expected through the central and southern interior east of about Longreach to Cunnamulla. Mostly fine conditions will continue over the southeast with only isolated light showers. Fine conditions will continue in the west. Forecast for Sunday A new surface trough will enter western Queensland, though conditions will remain fine over much of the state. Another trough will extend from the central Queensland coast to the low moving east southeast over the Coral Sea. Scattered showers and possible isolated storms are expected through central districts in the moist and unstable wind flow into the trough. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will also occur through the northern tropics. Mostly fine conditions will continue through the southern interior and southeast with only isolated showers, mostly inland. Forecast for Monday The new surface trough will move east over the interior of the state while a new upper level trough will most likely approach the western border. Showers and thunderstorms will occur through the tropics and northwest Queensland in a moist and unstable airmass. Showers and possible isolated thunderstorms are expected over central districts east of Emerald and the Wide Bay due to instability associated with the inland surface trough. Mostly fine conditions will occur over elsewhere over central and southern Queensland with only isolated showers and possible thunderstorms. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A weak monsoon trough will most likely develop once again over the Peninsula district during the outlook period, with rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms occurring over much of the Queensland tropics. The new upper level trough will move rapidly east over the state on Tuesday, generating showers and isolated thunderstorms over central and southern districts. A surface trough will most likely deepen over the Queensland interior from Wednesday, producing a band of showers and thunderstorms from the southern tropical coast into the central and southern interior. S'ly winds will most likely increase along the southern Queensland coast during the outlook period, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms expected over southeast districts.
