MELBOURNE - Jan 31/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current Northeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Lockhart River. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A middle to upper level trough should remain over the state's southwest before drifting eastwards on Friday. A surface trough extends from the Gulf Country down into the central and southern interior. The monsoon trough lies over the far north of the state and the northern parts of the Coral Sea, and will remain anchored in the area until the end of the week. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with some moderate to locally heavy falls over the northern tropics, and the northern, central and southern interior. Mainly isolated showers about the state's southeast, though more widespread about the coast during the morning. Scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and rain periods about the north tropical coast and nearby inland areas. Fine over the far west of the state except for some isolated showers over the state's northwest and over parts of the Warrego region. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state. Gusty showers and moderate to fresh NW winds over the far northern tropics, tending strong about coastal areas. Forecast for Thursday A strong monsoon flow will continue to push gusty showers, thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rain areas over the state's far north. An active surface trough will remain over the state's interior, producing scattered showers, thunderstorms and moderate to locally heavy rain over the central and southern interior. A weak onshore flow should produce some mainly isolated showers about the state's southeast, more widespread about the coast during the morning. Fine over the far west except for some areas of morning drizzle about the Warrego region. Forecast for Friday A low may form within the monsoon trough over the northwest Coral Sea, but is expected to move away from the coast. Nevertheless fresh onshore winds around the low may produce some showers and rain areas about the north tropical coast with some moderate to heavy falls. A strong monsoon flow should continue to the north of the low, producing further gusty showers, storms and areas of moderate to heavy rain over the state's far north. A surface trough is expected to produce scattered showers, thunderstorms and moderate to locally heavy falls through the central and southern interior. Isolated showers about the southeast districts in a weak onshore flow, and fine over the far west except for some areas of morning drizzle about the Warrego region. Forecast for Saturday If a low pressure system does form in the Coral Sea it is expected to contract further offshore, allowing the monsoon flow over the state's far north to weaken and the showers, storms and moderate to heavy rain areas to contract into the North Tropical Coast and the Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts. More isolated showers and storms are expected about most of the remaining central and eastern tropics, with the overall rain totals expected be less than earlier in the week. Mainly fine about the state's southeast except for some isolated showers about the coast. Fine over the western districts. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The monsoon trough will remain near stationary over the northern reaches of the Coral Sea, causing further showers and rain areas about the state's northeast coast and nearby inland areas. A high over the Great Australian Bight should keep the remainder of the state fairly settled, with just isolated showers and storms expected about the eastern districts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday. Weather & WarningsAustraliaNew South WalesVictoriaQueenslandWarnings SummaryForecastsBrisbane ForecastQld.
