MELBOURNE - Jan 31/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current Northeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Torres Strait and Lockhart River. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A middle to upper level trough will move slowly eastwards across southern Queensland and move off the coast on Friday. A broad and relatively weak surface trough will deepen over central areas of the state during the next few days as a high pressure system over the Great Australian Bight moves into the southern Tasman Sea. The monsoon trough over the far north of the state and the northwest Coral Sea will remain anchored in the area until the end of the week. A weak low currently over the western Cape York Peninsula is forecast to move east into the Coral Sea later in the week and continue moving eastwards. A weak ridge will develop along the southern and central coasts of Queensland from Wednesday onwards. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with some moderate to heavy falls over the northern tropics. Scattered showers and thunderstorms through the southern tropics and into the central and southern interior tending to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls. Isolated showers about the remaining eastern districts. Fine over the far west of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state. Winds becoming moderate to fresh NW over the far northern tropics tending strong about coastal areas. Forecast for Wednesday Showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with some moderate to heavy falls over the northern tropics. Scattered showers and thunderstorms through the southern tropics and into the central and southern interior tending to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls. Isolated showers about the remaining eastern districts, though tending scattered about the southern tropical coast. Fine over the far west of the state. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state. Moderate to fresh NW over the far northern tropics tending strong about coastal areas. Forecast for Thursday The vigorous NW monsoon will continue over the far north of the state and over the northwest Coral Sea. A low pressure system will likely push into the northwest Coral Sea and move eastwards. Monsoonal showers, storms and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls will continue in the area. Across much of the interior showers and storms will continue. Isolated showers will occur over the southeast and adjacent areas but tend scattered about the exposed coast due to the onshore flow. Fine conditions will continue over the far west. Forecast for Friday The NW monsoon flow over the far north of the state will weaken as the low over the northwest Coral Sea continues to move eastwards, away from the coast. So the showers, storms and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls will become less scattered with the main activity becoming focussed on the North Tropical Coast and the Herbert Burdekin. About the remaining central and eastern tropics showers and storms will continue with isolated moderate to heavy falls. Further southwards over the central and southern interior only isolated showers and storms will develop. Isolated showers will occur over the southeast and adjacent areas but tend scattered about the exposed coast due to the onshore flow. Fine conditions will continue over the far west. Forecast for Saturday The NW monsoon flow over the far north of the state will weaken further as the low over the northwest Coral Sea continues to move eastwards, away from the coast. Showers, storms and rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls will contract to areas about the North Tropical Coast and the Herbert Burdekin. About the remaining central and eastern tropics showers and storms will continue, though rainfall is expected to ease. Further southwards over the central and southern interior only isolated showers and storms will develop. Isolated showers will occur over the southeast and adjacent areas. Fine conditions will continue over the far west. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The monsoon trough will remain near stationary over the far north of the state and will trigger further showers, storms and rain over the area. Over the remainder of the state over the inland isolated afternoon showers and/or storms will occur. Elsewhere conditions will be fine apart from isolated showers about the coast especially south from Fraser Island. Winds will freshen from the south along the far southern coast.
