web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weakening upper level trough over South Australia will move into southwest
Queensland today, and then remain stalled in this area til at least Thursday. An
inland surface trough will remain broad and relatively weak today, but will
strengthen over central areas of the state from Tuesday. The monsoon trough will
become established over the far north of the state from today and then remain in
the area and strengthen into the middle of the week. A weak ridge over the
southwestern Coral Sea will drift onto the east coast into mid-week.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with some moderate to heavy falls over
Cape York Peninsula. Showers and thunderstorms north of about Gladstone and over
most of the interior, although more isolated in the far south. Scattered showers
and drizzle areas over the southeast, decreasing in the afternoon. Moderate SE
to NE winds along the east coast, tending moderate to fresh NW'ly over the far
north tropics. Mostly light winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The inland trough will strengthen over the central west of the state, and
will link to a frontal system on the far northern coast of New South Wales.
Ridging will build onto the southern coast so isolated to scattered showers will
occur over most of the southeast and the adjacent central coast. Scattered to
widespread showers and thunderstorms should develop near the inland trough, with
more isolated activity about the southeast border ranges. Moderate to heavy
falls will continue over the far northern tropics in the monsoon flow, and are
also likely to develop about the North Tropical Coast. Fresh to strong NW
monsoon winds will occur about the far northern tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
The inland trough will remain in place over the interior state while ridging
will firm along the southern and central coasts of Queensland. Relatively stable
conditions with isolated showers over the southeast corner. Fine conditions over
the far southwest. Elsewhere, showers and storms will continue and will increase
in the far north where rain areas and moderate to heavy falls will occur due to
the vigorous monsoon flow. Rain areas with some heavy falls will continue about
the North Tropical Coast, possibly spreading further south into the Burdekin.
Fresh to strong NW monsoon winds will continue in the far north.
Forecast for Thursday
Vigorous monsoon flow is likely to continue over the far north and northern
Coral Sea, with a low likely to develop on the trough over the northwest Coral
Sea and move eastwards. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the central
west and gulf country, tending to rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to
heavy falls about the far north and the east coast north of about Bowen. A few
showers over the southeast corner. Remaining fine in the far southwest.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The monsoon trough will remain active across the north of the state into and
during the weekend. So further gusty monsoonal showers, storms and rain areas
will continue over the area. The low on the monsoon trough is likely to move
further east. The inland trough will move into western districts of the state
and will again trigger showers and storms near and to the east of the system.
Ridging will continue along the southern and central coasts and maintain
moderate SE winds and a few showers in exposed coastal areas.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
