For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation At 4pm EST, a monsoon low was located over land in the far northwest of the state. The low is expected to move southeast over the Queensland interior during the weekend. An upper level trough lies over central Australia, and will keep conditions unstable over much of the state well into the weekend. The monsoon trough should strengthen over the Peninsula district from Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Heavy rain areas and squally thunderstorms in the northwest with possible damaging winds gusts. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the southwest. Patchy rain, scattered showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms over the northeast tropics. Scattered showers, patchy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms in the southeast with some moderate falls. Rain areas and thunderstorms elsewhere over the state with moderate falls, locally heavy with thunderstorms. Moderate to fresh NW to NE winds over northern Queensland, strong and gusty at times in the northwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times near the southern coast. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon low is expected to keep generating heavy falls and possible damaging wind gusts as it moves from the northwest of the state into the central interior. A trough will extend from the low into the Channel Country. A strengthening, moist NE'ly wind flow to the east of this trough will also produce thundery rain areas with heavy falls and possible damaging gusts through the southern interior and into the central highlands. Rain areas and thunderstorms with and some locally heavy falls over the remaining central districts. Instability will decrease over the southeast though patchy rain and showers will occur in a moist onshore wind flow. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue over the northeast tropics. Conditions clearing near the western border in a drier S'ly flow behind the surface trough. Forecast for Sunday The upper level trough should remain over central Australia while the low pressure system moves south over the southern interior of the state, generating heavy rain and possible damaging winds gusts before it contracts into New South Wales. Cloudy conditions will continue in the southeast with patchy rain and showers. An unstable airmass over remaining parts of the state will generate showers and isolated thunderstorms, more widespread through central districts and areas northwest of about Richmond with some heavy falls likely with thunderstorms. Forecast for Monday Conditions will ease over the southern interior of Queensland as the low moves southwards further into New South Wales. However, the upper level trough near our western border should gradually weaken near the southwestern border. The moist and unstable airmass ahead of this trough will generate widespread showers and thunderstorms in a band from the tropics into central parts and through to the southern interior. Gusty monsoonal showers and rain about the Peninsula district. Patchy rain and showers will continue in the southeast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southwest. Forecast for Tuesday The upper level trough should gradually move eastwards into the southern interior, allowing showers and isolated thunderstorms to occur over the central interior and southern interior districts. An onshore flow should continue to produce showers about the eastern districts, with more widespread showers spreading to rain areas about the northeast coast. Gusty monsoonal showers and rain about the Peninsula district, and mainly fine near the western border. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The upper level trough should remain over the southern interior during the outlook period, maintaining a band of showers and thunderstorms from the northern tropics into the state's interior. Mainly fine about the far southwest, and a weak onshore flow should produce showers about the east coast, tending to rain periods about the northeast coast. The monsoon should continue gusty showers and areas of rain over the far north. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
