Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 22/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The high over the Tasman Sea will continue to move slowly eastwards while the
associated ridge along the east coast will gradually erode in response to the
upper trough over Queensland. The upper trough will become well established over
southern inland Queensland during the day and will remain near stationary until
the end of the week. The monsoon burst will move into the Gulf of Carpentaria
during the day and persist until the end of the week when the monsoon low over
the Northern Territory finally moves into the vicinity of the Queensland and
Northern Territory border.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms across much of the state, with rain areas
about the northern Cape York Peninsula. Morning rain areas with some moderate to
heavy falls about parts of the southwest and central and southern interior. Rain
areas are also expected to develop about the southeast during the late afternoon
and evening. Fine over the far southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds
across most of the state, fresh at times about the central and southern coast.
Light to moderate NE to NW winds over the far northern tropics.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough will remain near stationary and again trigger showers and
thunderstorms with local rain areas in most areas of the state. Further moderate
to heavy falls will occur. The cloud and rain band with local thunder over the
southeast will weaken a little by late in the day. The active monsoon trough
will slip further southwards onto southern Cape York Peninsula..
Forecast for Wednesday
.Showers and thunderstorms will continue in most areas of the state with the
upper trough remaining the dominant feature. The upper trough will generate a
new cloud band with rain over most eastern coastal districts and the adjacent
inland. Some moderate to heavy falls will occur with the cloud band. The monsoon
trough will slip southwards into the central tropics.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough will move westwards and will continue to trigger showers and
storms across most of the state. The cloud and rain band in eastern districts
will mostly move seawards during the morning. The monsoon trough will remain
near stationary over the central tropics. The monsoon low over the Northern
Territory will move eastwards and will spread rain into areas north of the
monsoon trough.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Conditions will remain unsettled over the state into the weekend. The monsoon
low over the Northern Territory will continue to move eastwards and may slip
into the north-west of the state as a decaying feature on Saturday. The upper
trough will continue as the main weather force over the state into the weekend
and will move only slowly eastwards by the weekend. The trough will generate a
new cloud and rain band over the state on Friday and this rain band will then
contract slowly eastwards. So further showers and storms with rain areas and
moderate to heavy falls will continue into the weekend.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
