MELBOURNE - Jan 19/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge extends up the east coast of Queensland from a high in the Great Australian Bight. A weak upper trough lies over southeast Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the southeast districts and southeast interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also expected about the Central Coast and central interior districts as humidity gradually increases. More widespread shower and thunderstorm activity is expected over northern districts, spreading out to rain areas north of about Cardwell. Fine conditions will continue in the far west. Light to moderate SE to NE winds about most of the state, fresh about the central and southern east coast. Forecast for Saturday The high in the Great Australian Bight will move further east and strengthen wit the ridge strengthening along the east coast of Queensland. A weak monsoon trough is expected to form over Cape York Peninsula, causing the rain areas, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to contract into the Peninsula district. More isolated shower and thunderstorm activity is expected elsewhere over the northern tropics and over the eastern half of the state. The far southeast of the state should be mainly fine with only isolated showers. Remaining fine in the far west. Light to moderate SE to NE winds about most of the state, fresh about the central and southern east coast Forecast for Sunday The high should move into the Tasman Sea and continue to extend a ridge along the central and southern east coast. The weak monsoon trough is likely remain over Cape York Peninsula, causing further rain areas, scattered showers and isolated storms over the Peninsula district. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remaining tropics and the eastern, central and southern interior districts under the influence of a stationary upper trough near southeast Queensland. Forecast for Monday A weak low level trough over western Queensland will focus scattered showers and thunderstorms over western and central districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also possible over most of the remainder of Queensland as the upper level trough remains over the south of the state. More widespread showers, thunderstorms and patchy rain areas are likely over the Peninsula district as the monsoon trough strengthens in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A weak surface trough should persist over the state's interior, with scattered showers, thunderstorms and rain areas over most of the state during the outlook period. The monsoon trough may remain over the Peninsula district during the outlook period, generating further rain areas and thunderstorms over the state's far north.
