Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 18/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weakening upper level trough lies near the central and southeast coasts and
is moving offshore. A surface trough lies off Queensland's southeast coast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Rain areas, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern
tropics with some moderate to locally heavy falls, mainly about the northeast
coast and nearby inland areas. Mainly fine over the southern tropics except for
just a few isolated showers. Fine over the remainder of the state except for
some mainly isolated showers and thunderstorms about the southeast districts.
Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
Remaining humid and unsettled over the northern tropics with areas of rain,
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly about the northeast coast
and nearby inland areas. Fine over the remainder of the state except for some
isolated showers and thunderstorms about the remaining eastern districts and the
southeast interior near a weak surface trough. Fine elsewhere. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state. Moderate to high fire dangers
over the southeast districts and the Central Highlands.
Forecast for Friday
An upper level trough is expected to lie over the state's southeast, and it,
along with an onshore flow, should produce some isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the southeast quarter of the state. More widespread shower
and thunderstorm activity is again expected over the northern districts,
spreading to rain areas at times about the northeast coast. Remaining fine in
the west.
Forecast for Saturday
A weak monsoon trough is expected to reform over Cape York Peninsula, causing
the rain areas, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to contract into
the Peninsula district. More isolated shower and thunderstorm activity is
expected elsewhere over the northern tropics and over the eastern half of the
state. Remaining fine in the west.
Forecast for Sunday
A weak monsoon trough may remain over Cape York Peninsula, causing further
rain areas, scattered showers and isolated storms over the Peninsula district.
More isolated showers and thunderstorms over the remaining tropics. Increasing
humidity ahead of a weak surface trough over western Queensland may encourage at
least isolated showers and thunderstorms over the western districts, while an
upper trough should also produce isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
remaining eastern districts.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A weak surface trough should persist over the state's interior, allowing at
least isolated showers and thunderstorms to occur over most of the state during
the outlook period. The monsoon trough is expected to remain over the Peninsula
district during the outlook period, generating further rain areas and
thunderstorms over the state's far north.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
