Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 17/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Flood Warning is current for coastal rivers and streams
from Noosa to Caboolture.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak trough lies well offshore of the southeast Queensland coast and
extends to the northeast New South Wales coast. A slow moving upper level trough
extends from the northwest of the state to the southeast interior. The upper
trough will move east during today, most likely contracting off the southeast
coast during this evening.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Rain areas, showers and thunderstorms over the tropics with moderate falls,
locally heavy with thunderstorms. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
Central Coast, increasing to scattered in the afternoon with some moderate
falls. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southeast on and east of the
Great Dividing Range, mostly during the afternoon. Mostly fine elsewhere over
central and southeast districts with just the chance of isolated showers or
thunderstorms. Fine in the west. Moderate SE to NE winds over most of the
state.
Forecast for Thursday
A moist and unstable airmass will persist through the tropics with rain
areas, showers and thunderstorms continuing. A low will most likely remain slow
moving off the northeast New South Wales coast, extending another upper level
trough into the interior of Queensland. Unstable conditions associated with this
trough will produce isolated showers and thunderstorms over central and
southeast districts. Fine conditions will continue in the west.
Forecast for Friday
The upper level trough will develop further over southeastern parts of the
state, increasing instability. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are therefore
expected over central and southeast districts, and should also extend into the
interior east of about Longreach due to increasing moisture. More widespread
shower and thunderstorm activity is expected over northern districts, increasing
further to rain areas and thunderstorms north of about Cardwell. Fine conditions
will continue in the far west.
Forecast for Saturday
A monsoon trough will most likely begin to organise near Cape York Peninsula,
producing rain areas and thunderstorms over the Peninsula district. Unstable
conditions will continue elsewhere over the tropics and through much of eastern
Queensland with showers and thunderstorms expected. A drier wind flow will
result in fine conditions elsewhere.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Low level moisture will again become established across most of the state
with showers and thunderstorms likely. This activity will most likely become
further enhanced from Monday onwards, particularly over areas north and east of
Longreach due to an upper level trough intensifying over the southern interior
of the state. The monsoon trough will most likely move slowly south over the
Peninsula district during the outlook period, generating rain areas and
thunderstorms over far northern Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
