Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 15/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Mackay
and Burnett Heads.

Weather Situation
A slow moving surface trough extends from a low over the north west of the
state into the southern interior. Another trough extends from the Coral Sea to
the central coast of Queensland. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a
strengthening ridge along the southern Queensland coast. A slow moving upper
level trough extends from the north west of the state into the southern
interior.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Cloudy with rain areas, showers and isolated thunderstorms in a band from the
northern tropics to the Southeast Coast district. Some moderate falls, locally
heavy near the coast and also with thunderstorms inland. Fine over the Channel
Country. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere over the interior. A cool
day over much of southern and central Queensland. Mostly light to moderate SE to
NE winds, fresh and gusty along the coast south of Bowen and over the
southeastern interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough should move a little further eastwards over the interior,
approaching the Darling Downs at night. A surface trough will continue to
combine with the upper feature to produce rain areas, showers and thunderstorms
in a band from the northern tropics to the Southeast Coast district with
moderate falls, possibly locally heavy near the coast. Unstable conditions will
maintain showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere from the northwest to the
central interior and south to about Cunnamulla. Fine conditions are expected
over the remainder of the state. Cool daytime temperatures will continue over
much of central and southern Queensland.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper level trough will most likely remain over eastern districts though
move closer to the east coast during the day. Rain areas, showers and
thunderstorms should continue through the northern tropics and into the Central
Coast. Patchy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms should also continue over
the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts, though this
activity may ease during the day depending on the movement of the upper trough.
Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected in the far northwest
and through the central and southeastern interior. Fine conditions will occur
elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
A moist and unstable airmass will persist through the tropics and the central
coast with showers and thunderstorms continuing. The upper level trough will
most likely contract off the southern coast, decreasing shower activity further.
Mostly fine conditions are also expected over the central and southeastern
interior with only isolated showers and the chance of afternoon thunderstorms.
Fine conditions will continue in the west.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
A moist and unstable airmass will maintain showers and thunderstorms over the
tropics throughout the outlook period. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms will also continue in a moist onshore wind flow over southeast
districts and the Capricornia. A new trough will most likely enter the interior
of the state during the weekend, increasing instability with showers and
isolated thunderstorms developing.
