Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 12/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A trough extends from the central coast to the central interior, and up to
the Gulf Country. A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a firm ridge
along the southern coast.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Mainly isolated showers and storms over most of the tropics, more widespread
and tending to periods of thundery rain about the Central Coast and northern
parts of the Central Highlands districts. Some moderate to heavy falls are
expected about the Central Coast district. Fine over the southern districts
except for some isolated light showers about the southeast coast and nearby
inland areas. Below average temperatures across the southern half of the state.
Moderate to fresh E to SE winds about the southern and central coasts. Light
to moderate SE to NE winds over the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Saturday
An upper trough will move into south-eastern Australia, producing isolated
showers and storms about the southeast interior, and scattered showers
developing during the day about the southeast districts. At the same time the
surface trough will deepen as it remains extended from the central coast to the
central west, and up to the Gulf Country. Areas of thundery rain with moderate
to heavy falls are possible over parts of the Central West, Central Highlands
and Central Coast districts. Mainly isolated showers and storms over most of
the remainder of the tropics. Fine over the west and southwest of the state.
Daytime temperatures well below average over the central and southern
interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough will move eastwards resulting in the cloud and rain band
clearing the south-east coast during the morning. However, isolated showers will
persist over the southeast districts, especially about the coast. Showers and
storms will continue over most of the tropics and near the inland trough over
the central and southern interior. The SE wind change may move onto the Herbert
and Burdekin coast, causing showers and storms to spread to rain areas. Fine
over the west of the state. Daytime temperatures below, or well below average
over much of the state except the northwest and the far north.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough is expected to drift a little westwards into the southeast
interior, and may produce some isolated showers and storms over the region. An
onshore wind flow should produce some isolated showers about the eastern
districts, more widespread and tending to rain at times about the northeast
coast due to a near surface trough over the region. Mainly isolated showers and
storms over the Peninsula district and the Gulf Country. Fine over the
interior. Daytime temperatures below, or well below average over much of the
state.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A ridge should remain along most of the east coast, and should continue to
push isolated showers onto the central and southeast districts, and more
widespread showers and areas of rain onto the north east coast. Scattered
showers and storms are expected about the Gulf Country and Peninsula districts.
Fine over the interior. Daytime temperatures should remain near or below
average over most of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
