MELBOURNE - Jan 12/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A trough was moving northwards along the southern coast and linked to the inland trough which extended from the north-west of the state to the south-east inland. A high over the Great Australian Bight extended a firm ridge along the southern coast in the wake of the coastal trough. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Scattered showers and storms over the far northern and eastern tropics. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SW to SE winds over most the southern and western districts becoming moderate to fresh along the southern coast. Light to moderate NW to NE winds elsewhere. A high to very high fire danger over the south-east of the state. Forecast for Friday The SE wind change will come to a halt on the northern part of the Central Coast as the ridging from the high over the Great Australian Bight stalls. However, the inland trough will drift a little further westwards allowing moist N to NW winds to spread southwards into the southern interior. So showers and storms will become more widespread and occur over the northern and eastern tropics and through the central interior and into northern parts of the southern interior. Some rain areas will develop late in the day about the central coast due to the wind change. Isolated stream showers will develop about the southern coast south from Fraser Island. Conditions will remain fine over much of the west of the state. Generally temperatures will be below average across the south of the state. Moderate to fresh SE winds will continue about the southern and central coasts while light to moderate SE winds will continue over the west of the state. Forecast for Saturday An upper trough will move into south-eastern Australia and destabilize conditions over the south-east. At the same time the inland trough will deepen. So expect conditions to become cloudy over the south-east with shower and rain areas developing. The SE wind change on the Central Coast will remain near stationary. So further showers and storms will occur over most of the tropics and near the inland trough over the central and southern interior. Rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls will continue about the Central Coast and adjacent inland. Fine conditions will continue over the west of the state. Due to the cloud cover over the south-east, daytime temperatures will remain well below average. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough will move eastwards resulting in the cloud and rain band clearing the south-east coast during the morning. However, isolated showers will persist especially about the coast. Showers and storms will continue over most of the tropics and near the inland trough over the central and southern interior. The SE wind change will move onto the Herbert and Burdekin coast and will produce rain areas with some moderate to heavy falls in this area. Fine over the west of the state. Forecast for Monday Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A ridge will generally extend along most of the east coast with only isolated showers occurring in coastal areas south of about the Cardwell area. Further northwards, showers will increase to rain at times about the North Tropical Coast. Elsewhere over the northern tropics scattered showers and storms will occur in the sultry conditions. Over the interior conditions will remain fine with hot N to NE winds. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
