Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Jan 9/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak surface trough extends from the state's northwest down to the
southeast.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Mainly isolated showers and storms in a band from the northwest to the
southeast of the state, and over the north tropical interior. Fine over the
central and northern east coast, and about the southern interior. Hot to very
hot about central and southeast districts. Light to moderate SW to NW winds
over much of the state, tending NW to NE near the east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough should stall near the Wide Bay region, and extend into the
state's northwest. Mainly isolated showers and storms near and north of the
trough, except about the northeast districts where conditions should remain
fine. Fine and cooler over the southern interior, and very warm to hot about the
remainder of the state. A weak southerly change is expected to move over the
far southeast of the state, but temperatures will remain above average over the
region. Light to moderate NW to NE winds north of the trough, and light to
moderate W to SW winds south of the trough.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough should remain over the Wide Bay region, and is likely to
continue extending into the state's northwest. Mainly isolated showers and
storms are again expected near and to the north of the trough, except about the
northeast districts where conditions should remain fine. Fine over the southern
and central interior. Hot conditions will persist to the north and east of the
trough, and also about the state's southeast.
Forecast for Thursday
A high over the Great Australian Bight should push Queensland's surface
trough northwards and extend from the Capricornia district to the Gulf Country.
The northward movement of the trough will confine the mainly isolated shower and
storm activity to the tropics. Fine over the southern districts, and the high
will push cooler SE winds over the state's southeast during the day. Remaining
hot near and north of the trough.
Forecast for Friday
A ridge of high pressure over southern Australia will push cooler southerly
winds further up Queensland's east coast, with below average daytime
temperatures expected south of about St. Lawrence, and also over the southern
interior. Mainly fine with just some isolated showers about the southeast in
the onshore wind flow. A surface trough should produce some mainly isolated
showers and storms from the central interior to the Gulf Country, and also over
the northeast tropics. Fine over the southern interior.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to remain about the northern half and
central interior of the state during the weekend. There is the chance that a
slow moving upper level trough may increase shower and storm activity about the
southeast interior early in the new week.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Tuesday.
