MELBOURNE - Jan 6/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high pressure system east of Bass Strait will weaken and move east during the weekend. A trough will enter western Victoria late today as a deepening low pressure system moves south of the Bight. The trough will then move across eastern Victoria on Sunday as the low moves south of Tasmania. A ridge will extend across northern Victoria on Monday and Tuesday with cold fronts moving through Bass Strait. Forecast for the rest of SaturdayMostly cloudy with patchy rain extending from the west to reach eastern districts later today. Rain becoming more widespread in the west during the afternoon and evening with isolated thunderstorms possible. Mainly dry in the far east. Hot in the northwest, warm elsewhere with moderate to fresh northerly winds, although milder afternoon seabreezes along the Gippsland coast.Fire Danger - Severe in the northwest, reaching extreme in the Mallee. High to very high elsewhere.Sunday 8 JanuaryRain areas and isolated thunderstorms contracting to the east during the afternoon and clearing during the evening. Isolated showers to follow in the south, mainly the southwest and near the coast. Generally mild. Moderate northwesterly winds in the east and fresh westerly winds elsewhere, extending throughout in the afternoon and becoming strong near the coast.Monday 9 JanuaryIsolated showers over southern and mountain districts, mainly near the coast. Showers clearing from east Gippsland by the afternoon. Generally mild. Partly cloudy in the south and mainly sunny in the north. Moderate westerly winds, fresh at times near the coast.Tuesday 10 JanuaryIsolated showers over southern and mountain districts. Dry in the north. Cool to mild and partly cloudy in the south. Mild and mainly sunny in the north.
