Weather Situation
A weak ridge of high pressure lies along the east coast of Queensland. A high
in the Great Australian Bight will move east into the Tasman Sea by late Friday.
A weak upper trough over the southeast of the state will move offshore tonight
with a secondary weak upper trough crossing the southeast on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers about the northern coasts and about the Gulf of Carpentaria
coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the southeast interior and
towards the southern Border Ranges. Fine elsewhere. Hot over the interior,
especially in the southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds.
Forecast for Friday
Fine for most of the state under stable conditions. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms about the southeast of the state, again most likely near the
southern ranges. Isolated afternoon showers may also develop northwards into the
Central Highlands. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf Country.
Very warm to hot across the state with maximum temperatures likely to exceed 45
degrees Celsius in the far southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds for most
parts with moderate SW to SE winds over the southern interior.
Forecast for Saturday
Stable conditions will lead to fine and warm to hot conditions for most of
the state. Isolated afternoon showers are possible about the Central Highlands
and Coalfields and northern Darling Downs. Isolated showers and a thunderstorm
or two about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Early morning light showers or
drizzle are likely about the southeast coast. Very warm to hot across the
interior of the state with maximum temperatures likely to exceed 45 degrees
Celsius in the far southwest. Minimum temperatures will also be several degrees
above average.
Forecast for Sunday
Patchy rain and isolated to scattered thunderstorms will enter the southwest
of the state ahead of an upper level trough and surface trough, slowly spreading
east during the day and reaching the Northwest, Central West and Darling Downs
districts late. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf Country and
western peninsula. Warm to hot temperatures throughout most of the state,
although the far southwest should see some respite in maximum temperatures due
to the increasing cloud and precipitation.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough should now lie from the northwest of the state to the
southeast, producing a band of showers and isolated thunderstorms. Moderate to
fresh southerly winds will develop about the southern interior with fine
conditions expected. The central and northern parts of the east coast are
expected to remain fine. Very warm to hot conditions are expected about most of
the state.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The surface trough should continue to move slowly north and east through the
outlook period. Moist and unstable conditions should produce isolated to
scattered showers and thunderstorms to the northeast of this trough, contracting
to the far northeast of the state by Thursday. Fine conditions will develop in
the wake of the trough. Very warm to hot for most of the state, except the far
south and southwest where temperatures should be close to average.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
