MELBOURNE - Jan 5/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high in the Bight extends a ridge across Victoria. The high will move across Bass Strait on Friday reaching the Tasman Sea at night. A trough will enter western Victoria on Saturday afternoon as a low pressure system develops south of the Bight. The trough will then move across eastern Victoria on Sunday as the low to the south deepens and moves south of Tasmania. A ridge will extend across northern Victoria on Monday. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayMostly clear apart from isolated showers developing about the coast and far eastern ranges this evening. Moderate southerly winds, fresh at times near the coast.Friday 6 JanuaryIsolated morning drizzle near the coast and over east Gippsland clearing by the afternoon. Otherwise a dry and mostly sunny day. Mild in the south and warmer in the north with light southwest to southeasterly winds becoming variable over the north during the afternoon. Coastal seabreezes in the afternoon extending inland in the south during the day.Fire Danger - Generally High.Saturday 7 JanuaryPatchy rain and possible thunderstorms extending from the west during the afternoon and evening and becoming a more widespread in the west. Mainly dry in the far east. Hot in the northwest, warm elsewhere with increasing cloud and moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds, although milder afternoon seabreezes along the Gippsland coast.Sunday 8 JanuaryRain areas and isolated thunderstorms contracting to the east during the afternoon and clearing during the evening. Isolated showers to follow about the southwest and near the coast. Generally mild. Moderate northwesterly winds in the east and fresh westerly winds elsewhere, extending throughout in the afternoon and becoming strong near the coast.Monday 9 JanuaryIsolated showers in the south, contracting to the coast by the afternoon . Cool to mild and partly cloudy in the south. Mild and mainly sunny in the north.
