MELBOURNE - Jan 1/12 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea will drift slowly eastwards today and Tuesday. A trough of low pressure will reach western Victoria late Monday before weakening. A second trough will extend from the west late Tuesday to reach the east Wednesday morning pushed by a cold front crossing Tasmania. A high in the Bight will extend a ridge across Victoria on Thursday. Forecast for the rest of MondayLocal early morning fog and low cloud over Gippsland otherwise a dry, hot and mostly sunny. Moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds ahead of a milder southwesterly change reaching the southwest late in the afternoon then pushing into central areas at night and weakening. Winds lighter in the east with afternoon seabreezes developing along the Gippsland coast.Fire Danger - Very High to Severe, reaching Extreme in the southwest.Tuesday 3 JanuaryWarm to hot with moderate to fresh northwest to westerly winds ahead of a cooler southwest change about the southwest coast, extending eastwards overnight. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms, mainly over western districts and about the ranges.Wednesday 4 JanuaryScattered showers on and south of the ranges, more isolated in the north and clearing from the west during the afternoon. The chance of thunderstorms about the northeast ranges. Cooler, fresh southwesterly winds extending throughout and becoming strong near the coast.Thursday 5 JanuaryIsolated early morning showers about the east Gippsland coast clearing then a dry day. Isolated showers redeveloping near the coast at night. Cool in the south, mild to warm in the north.
