MELBOURNE - Dec 31/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
The monsoon trough has moved north of Cape York Peninsula. A ridge of higher
pressure is developing about the east coast of Queensland from a high in the
southern Tasman Sea. An upper level trough over eastern Queensland is now moving
out to sea.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Isolated showers about exposed parts of the east coast. Showers and
thunderstorms contracting to the Gulf coast and the northern tropics. Dry over
the interior with maximum temperatures exceeding 40C in the west. Light to
moderate SE to NE wins over the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the
east coast. Light to moderate NE winds over the interior.
Forecast for Monday
Overall the pattern is much the same as Sunday with the high in the southern
Tasman Sea maintaining a ridge about the east coast of Queensland. Isolated
showers continuing about exposed points of the east coast, dry and hot over the
interior. Thunderstorm activity decreasing over the northern tropics. Maximum
temperatures exceeding 40C in the west with maxima reaching near 44C in the far
southwest of the state.
Forecast for Tuesday
Little change in the weather from Monday, the ridge along the east coast is
still the dominating the weather for Queensland. Isolated showers about the
exposed east coast, although decreasing towards the southeast coast.
Thunderstorm activity confined to the Gulf coast and the west coast of Cape York
Peninsula. Dry and hot over most of the interior with many locations in the west
over 40C. Temperatures reaching 45C in the far southwest of the state.
Forecast for Wednesday
A new surface trough enters the southwest of the state with no weather,
otherwise conditions remain much the same across the state. The southern high
moves east and weakens allowing for the coastal ridge to weaken. This will shift
winds more northeasterly on the southeast coast with rising temperatures. No
change in general weather elements across the state from Tuesday.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The trough stalls in the west while the coastal ridge redevelops about the
east coast. Instability rapidly increases over the southeast region for Thursday
with afternoon showers and thunderstorms. By Friday the thunderstorm activity
clears over the southeast but showers redevelop about the east coast. By
Saturday the coastal ridge weakens with less showers about the east coast. The
monsoon trough remains north of Queensland with reduced rainfall across the
state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
