MELBOURNE - Dec 31/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time The Strong Wind Warning for coastal waters between Lockhart River and Double Island Point, excluding Hervey Bay has been cancelled. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough lies over northern Cape York Peninsula with a monsoon low located on the trough over the northwest Coral Sea. A ridge of high pressure extends along the east coast of Queensland from a slow-moving high in the Tasman Sea. An upper level trough over southeast Queensland will contract offshore early on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula District and about the Gulf Country. Isolated showers about the east coast. Very isolated showers over the eastern interior. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern and central interior. Fine over western Queensland. Moderate to fresh westerly winds across the far northern tropics. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Sunday Fresh SE winds about the east coast will continue to bring isolated showers to the east coast, more frequent about the north tropical coast in the morning. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue about Peninsula and Gulf Country districts. Fine over the remainder of the state. Moderate SE to NE winds about most of the state, fresh about the east coast. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees above average in the far southwest. Forecast for Monday The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to extend a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Stable conditions are expected for most of the state apart from some isolated showers about the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms will continue the far north and Gulf Country. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees above average in the southwest of the state, exceeding 40 Celsius in places. Forecast for Tuesday The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to extend a ridge along the east coast of Queensland with the onshore flow producing isolated showers in coastal areas. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely about the far north of Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. The remainder of the state should be fine. Maximum temperatures will be several degrees above average in the west of the state, exceeding 40 Celsius in places and possibly reach 45 Celsius in the far southwest. Forecast for Wednesday The high in the Tasman Sea weakens whilst a new high starts to build in the Great Australian Bight. The ridge along the east coast therefore weakens with the onshore winds easing. Most of the state should be fine with only very isolated showers about the east coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely about the Peninsula District and about the Gulf Country. Maximum temperatures will remain above average in the west and through the southern interior and may reach 45 Celsius in the far southwest. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday Most of the state should remain fine through the outlook period with only isolated showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula and Gulf Country. Very warm to hot conditions should also persist through most of the interior of the state with temperatures close to 45 Celsius in the far southwest . Very isolated showers are possible about the east coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible about the far southeast of the state on Thursday and Friday as an upper trough brushes the area.
