Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies over northern Cape York Peninsula with a monsoon low
located on the trough over the northwest Coral Sea. A ridge of high pressure
extends along the east coast of Queensland from a slow-moving high in the Tasman
Sea. An upper level trough over southeast Queensland will contract offshore
early on Sunday.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula District and about the
Gulf Country. Isolated showers about the east coast. Very isolated showers over
the eastern interior. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
southern and central interior. Fine over western Queensland. Moderate to fresh
westerly winds across the far northern tropics. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
Fresh SE winds about the east coast will continue to bring isolated showers
to the east coast, more frequent about the north tropical coast in the morning.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue about Peninsula and Gulf
Country districts. Fine over the remainder of the state. Moderate SE to NE winds
about most of the state, fresh about the east coast. Maximum temperatures will
be several degrees above average in the far southwest.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to extend a ridge along the east
coast of Queensland. Stable conditions are expected for most of the state apart
from some isolated showers about the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms will
continue the far north and Gulf Country. Maximum temperatures will be several
degrees above average in the southwest of the state, exceeding 40 Celsius in
places.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to extend a ridge along the east
coast of Queensland with the onshore flow producing isolated showers in coastal
areas. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely about the far north of Cape
York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. The remainder of the state should be fine.
Maximum temperatures will be several degrees above average in the west of the
state, exceeding 40 Celsius in places and possibly reach 45 Celsius in the far
southwest.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high in the Tasman Sea weakens whilst a new high starts to build in the
Great Australian Bight. The ridge along the east coast therefore weakens with
the onshore winds easing. Most of the state should be fine with only very
isolated showers about the east coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are
likely about the Peninsula District and about the Gulf Country. Maximum
temperatures will remain above average in the west and through the southern
interior and may reach 45 Celsius in the far southwest.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
Most of the state should remain fine through the outlook period with only
isolated showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula and Gulf Country.
Very warm to hot conditions should also persist through most of the interior of
the state with temperatures close to 45 Celsius in the far southwest . Very
isolated showers are possible about the east coast. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms are possible about the far southeast of the state on Thursday and
Friday as an upper trough brushes the area.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
