Weather Situation
The monsoon trough over northern Cape York Peninsula is moving north as a
ridge of higher pressure develops about the east coast of Queensland. The
tropical low that crossed Cape York Peninsula is weaker and moving east along
the monsoon trough into the Coral Sea. An upper level trough occurs near the
east coast of Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, decreasing southwards. Isolated
showers about the east coast, more frequent on the northeast tropical coast.
Very isolated afternoon showers over the eastern interior including the
southeast region. Isolated showers and thunderstorms developing over the
southern interior in the afternoon. Dry over western Queensland. Moderate to
fresh westerly winds across the northern tropics. Light to moderate easterly
winds over the southern Gulf. Fresh to strong SE winds about most of the east
coast.
Forecast for Sunday
The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to maintain a ridge along the east
coast of Queensland but SE winds will ease. Dry over the interior, isolated
showers about the east coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the
tropics generally. Rather hot conditions in the far west with NE winds.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the southern Tasman Sea continues to maintain the ridge along the
east coast of Queensland with no overall change in the weather. Maximum
temperatures exceeding 40C in the far west.
Forecast for Tuesday
As of Monday the pattern is much the same with isolated showers about the
east coast, dry over the interior. Thunderstorm activity confined to the Gulf
coast and the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Very hot in the far west with
many locations above 40C.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The coastal ridge weakens but dry weather dominates most of the interior.
Thunderstorm activity decreases about the Gulf coast and retreats to the
northern tropics. Showers clear the southeast coast on Wednesday but instability
increases again on Thursday as a new surface trough moves through with showers
and thunderstorms. Fine over the remainder of the interior. Isolated showers
about the east coast north of Fraser Island. After the trough passage through
the southeast on Friday thunderstorm activity will be pushed into the Darling
Downs with isolated showers remaining on the southeast coast. No change over the
tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
