Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 30/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Cooktown and Bowen, extending to waters between Lockhart River and Burnett Heads
on Saturday.
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers.

Weather Situation
A monsoon low is located off the northeast coast of Queensland and will
continue moving east into the northwest Coral Sea. A high to the east of
Tasmania will continue moving east into the Tasman Sea over the weekend and
extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast. An upper trough over the
southeast of the state will move offshore late Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the Peninsula and North
Tropical Coast districts. Isolated showers about remaining eastern districts.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf Country and about the eastern
interior and southern interior. Fine about western districts. Light to moderate
SE to NE winds, fresh to strong along the east coast. Fresh W to NW wind about
the far north.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms expected in the northern tropics with
scattered showers near the east coast north of Cardwell. Isolated showers
elsewhere about the east coast in the fresh to strong SE'ly flow. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior, isolated afternoon showers
elsewhere further north over the eastern interior. Fine about the Darling Downs
and Granite Belt and western districts. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds about
most of the state with strong winds about the east coast.  Moderate to fresh W
to NW winds about the far north.
Forecast for Sunday
The monsoon trough should continue to move northeast away from the Queensland
coast with SE winds beginning to ease about the east coast, though remaining
fresh. Stable conditions over much of the state will result in fine conditions
for most of the state with only isolated showers about the east coast. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms will continue about the north of the state with
scattered showers for the North Tropical Coast. Very warm to hot in the
southwest of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to extend a ridge along the east
coast of Queensland. Stable conditions are expected for most of the state apart
from some isolated showers about the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms will
continue the far north and Gulf Country. Very warm to hot in the southwest of
the state.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to extend a ridge along the east
coast of Queensland with the onshore flow along the east coast producing
isolated showers. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely about the far
north of Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. The remainder of the state
should be fine.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Generally fine conditions around the state apart from showers and
thunderstorms in the northern tropics. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to
develop about the southern interior on Thursday and Friday as an upper trough
looks likely to approach from the west. Very warm to hot over western
districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
