Weather Situation
At 4am, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Grant was located on the west coast of Cape York
Peninsula near Weipa. It is expected to move into the northwestern parts of the
Coral Sea later today. A surface trough is located near the southern Tropical
coast. A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge along the
Queensland coast south of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Rain, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the Peninsula and
North Tropical Coast districts. Isolated showers about remaining eastern
districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the north, and about the
eastern interior, mostly during the afternoon. Fine in the southwest. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds, fresh to strong along the east coast. Winds fresh to
strong W to NW about the far north.
Forecast for Saturday
Ex-TC Grant will continue moving eastwards in the Coral Sea and slowly
intensify. Strong winds easing in the far north, but remaining for waters north
of about Gladstone. Showers and thunderstorms expected in the northern tropics,
scattered near the east coast. The upper level trough that was previously over
the interior moves east and this decreases the instability. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the southern interior, isolated afternoon showers elsewhere
further north over the eastern interior. Showers continuing about the east
coast. Becoming fine over the southeast interior.
Forecast for Sunday
Ex-TC Grant moves further away from the Queensland coast, with winds
beginning to ease about the east coast though strong winds still remain for
central and some northern waters. Stable conditions over much of the state will
result in fine conditions for southern and central areas apart from some very
isolated showers near the coast. Showers and thunderstorms in the north of the
state, with showers beginning to ease for the North Tropical Coast. Very warm to
hot in the southwest of the state.
Forecast for Monday
Stable conditions through the southern and central areas of the state with
fine conditions apart from some isolated coastal showers. Showers and
thunderstorms continuing in the north, with storms generally contracting to the
coast and adjacent inland parts around the Gulf. Very warm to hot in the
southwest of the state.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Generally fine conditions around the state apart from showers and
thunderstorms in the northern tropics. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to
develop about the southern interior on Thursday with an upper trough approaching
from the west. Very warm to hot over western districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
