MELBOURNE - Dec 29/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Peninsula, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and parts of the Gulf Country districts. A Strong Wind Warning is current for Northeast Gulf Waters. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Bowen. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation At 4am, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Grant was located on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula near Weipa. It is expected to move into the northwestern parts of the Coral Sea later today. A surface trough is located near the southern Tropical coast. A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge along the Queensland coast south of the trough. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the Peninsula and North Tropical Coast districts. Isolated showers about remaining eastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the north, and about the eastern interior, mostly during the afternoon. Fine in the southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh to strong along the east coast. Winds fresh to strong W to NW about the far north. Forecast for Saturday Ex-TC Grant will continue moving eastwards in the Coral Sea and slowly intensify. Strong winds easing in the far north, but remaining for waters north of about Gladstone. Showers and thunderstorms expected in the northern tropics, scattered near the east coast. The upper level trough that was previously over the interior moves east and this decreases the instability. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior, isolated afternoon showers elsewhere further north over the eastern interior. Showers continuing about the east coast. Becoming fine over the southeast interior. Forecast for Sunday Ex-TC Grant moves further away from the Queensland coast, with winds beginning to ease about the east coast though strong winds still remain for central and some northern waters. Stable conditions over much of the state will result in fine conditions for southern and central areas apart from some very isolated showers near the coast. Showers and thunderstorms in the north of the state, with showers beginning to ease for the North Tropical Coast. Very warm to hot in the southwest of the state. Forecast for Monday Stable conditions through the southern and central areas of the state with fine conditions apart from some isolated coastal showers. Showers and thunderstorms continuing in the north, with storms generally contracting to the coast and adjacent inland parts around the Gulf. Very warm to hot in the southwest of the state. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Generally fine conditions around the state apart from showers and thunderstorms in the northern tropics. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop about the southern interior on Thursday with an upper trough approaching from the west. Very warm to hot over western districts.
