MELBOURNE - Dec 28/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Tropical Cyclone Watch has been declared between Thursday Island and Gilbert River Mouth. A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for the Peninsula and parts of the Gulf Country districts. A Gale Warning has been issued for Eastern Gulf Waters north of Mornington Island to the Gilbert River Mouth. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation Ex-TC Grant is moving eastwards through the Gulf of Carpentaria, and will possibly redevelop into a Tropical Cyclone during Friday. A surface trough is located near the southern Tropical coast. A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge along the Queensland coast south of the trough. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Rain areas and thunderstorms increasing across the northern tropics and southern tropical coast, with moderate to heavy falls likely especially over the western half of Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers along the remaining east coast, extending to adjacent inland areas in the afternoon. Isolated showers and thunderstorms through remaining northern and eastern districts, mostly in the afternoon. Fine in the southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh along the southern coast and becoming strong about parts of the Gulf coast. Forecast for Friday Ex-TC Grant will move towards the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, and likely cross the mainland of Cape York Peninsula as a Tropical Cyclone during the day and weaken. Extensive rain areas with thunderstorms remaining over the tropics with some heavy falls. Isolated showers along the coast due to the ridge. Isolated showers over the remaining northern and eastern parts of the state during the afternoon, with isolated thunderstorms developing over the southeast interior. Fine in the west. Strong to gale force winds expected in the Gulf, with strong winds developing along the northern coast. Forecast for Saturday Ex-TC Grant will continue moving east into the Coral Sea, and likely to intensifying again over the ocean. Strong SE winds expected along the northern and central coasts of Queensland. Rain areas easing over the tropics and tending towards showers and thunderstorms, but still expecting some moderate to heavy falls especially during the morning. Isolated thunderstorms west towards the Gulf coast and in the southern interior. Isolated afternoon showers about the east coast, and developing over inland areas in the afternoon. Forecast for Sunday Ex-TC Grant will continue moving eastwards away from the Queensland coast. Isolated showers along the east coast, tending scattered about the tropical coast. Showers and thunderstorms about the Peninsula and Gulf coast. Strong winds expected about the tropical and central coasts, gradually easing. Fine over the southern and central interior. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Thunderstorm activity will decrease over the tropics, with very isolated showers about the east coast. A ridge of high pressure will dominate at the surface about the east coast. A trough will occur west of Queensland with widespread above average temperatures expected over western districts in the northeasterly airflow.
