MELBOURNE - Dec 28/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Tropical Cyclone Watch has been declared between Thursday Island and Gilbert River Mouth. A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for the Peninsula and parts of the Gulf Country districts. A Gale Warning has been issued for Northeast Gulf Waters. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Southeast Gulf Waters for Thursday. Strong Wind Warning cancelled Cape Moreton and Point Danger. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge along the southeast coast of Queensland following the coastal trough moving north along the central coast. Ex TC Grant is moving towards the western Gulf waters from the Top End. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern tropics, extending to a maximum over the central eastern interior and the central coast. Isolated showers about the Capricorn, Burnett and southeast coastal district. Fine over the remainder of the interior. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the tropics, increasing about the west coast of Cape York Peninsula with moderate to heavy falls developing overnight. Light to moderate NW to NE winds over the tropics, increasing in northern Gulf waters overnight. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the Capricorn southeast coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Thursday Former TC Grant will move east across to Gulf and intensify with NW to SW winds reaching Gale force over northern Gulf waters. Strong SE to NE winds over southern Gulf waters. Rain areas increasing across the tropics in general with moderate to heavy falls over the western half of Cape York Peninsula. The coastal trough will reach about Townsville with increased rainfall and moderate to heavy falls. Isolated showers and thunderstorms generally over the interior from the northwest through the central interior to the southern interior in the afternoon. Showers about the east coast with isolated afternoon showers inland. Fine in the far west. Forecast for Friday TC Grant will move across the mainland of Cape York Peninsula and weaken. Extensive rain areas with thunderstorms remaining over the tropics with some heavy falls. Becoming fine over the southeast interior with very isolated showers about the coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in a band from the tropics through the central interior to the southern interior. Showers generally about the central coast. Strong S to SW winds easing over the southern Gulf in the early morning and in the northern Gulf in the afternoon. Strong NW to NE winds developing about the northeast tropical coast. Remaining fine in the far west. Forecast for Saturday TC Grant progressing across the Coral sea after crossing the east coast and intensifying. Strong SE winds now developing about parts of the northeast tropical coast. Rain areas easing over the tropics and tending towards showers and thunderstorms. Isolated thunderstorms west towards the Gulf coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior. Isolated showers remaining about the east coast and through the eastern interior. Forecast for Sunday As the tropical cyclone moves further east winds will decrease about the northeast tropical coast. Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, isolated showers about the east coast. Fine over the interior. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Thunderstorm activity will decrease over the tropics on Monday to Wednesday with very isolated showers about the east coast. A ridge of higher pressure will dominate at the surface about the east coast. A trough will occur west of Queensland with rather hot conditions over western districts in the northeasterly airflow. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach over 40C in parts of the Channel Country on Sunday and increase further on Monday with Birdsville reaching near 43C. By Tuesday maxima over 40C will expand to the northwest as well as the whole of the Channel Country with Birdsville reaching near 45C.
