MELBOURNE - Dec 23/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for coastal areas between Sandy Cape and Point Danger. A Strong Wind Warning is current for offshore waters between Gladstone and Double Island Point, excluding Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A low [Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina] is situated in the western Coral Sea and moving slowly southeast. An area of high pressure [1025 hPa] lies near New Zealand and will remain slow moving over the next few days. The combination of these two systems is generating strong winds and increasing swells about southern parts of the Queensland coast. An upper level trough lies off the southeast coast of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers and rain areas about the far southeast of the state with possible local thunder due to lingering instability. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere southeast of about St Lawrence to Goodooga, mainly in the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers about the central coastal and the northeast tropical coast. Showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and about the Gulf region. Fine over the remainder of the state. Significant swells will lead to dangerous surf conditions about the coast south of Sandy Cape. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds over most of the state. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough and surface low will continue to move further southeast over the Coral Sea with conditions generally stabilizing over most of Queensland. A ridge will extend along the east coast from the high near New Zealand. Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland. Showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and over Cape York Peninsula. Fine through the interior. Significant swells will lead to dangerous surf conditions about the coast south of Sandy Cape. Moderate SE to NE winds, fresh about southern parts of the east coast. Moderate NW to NE winds about the far north tropics. Forecast for Monday The high near New Zealand will continue to extend a ridge along the far southern coast of Queensland. An upper trough looks likely to move over southeastern Australia with a surface trough expected to move north through the southern interior. This should generate sufficient instability for isolated showers and thunderstorms about the southern interior. Showers and thunderstorms about the Peninsula and Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Fine elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday The inland trough should continue to progress north through the central interior and the southeast region. The upper trough should also move north and increase instability over Queensland leading to showers and thunderstorms over most districts. The monsoon trough will remain across the far north of the state with rain areas spreading east across the Gulf of Carpentaria. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The trough should progress northwards during the outlook period with scattered showers and thunderstorms generally contracting to the north and northeast of the state with rain areas developing about the tropics. However, cold air aloft will maintain instability about the southern and central interior with isolated showers and thunderstorms still possible. A S to SE change is likely to extend along the southern coast during Wednesday, reaching the tropical coast by Friday, leading to isolated showers about the east coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday. Weather & WarningsAustraliaNew South WalesVictoriaQueenslandWarnings SummaryForecastsBrisbane ForecastQld.
