MELBOURNE - Dec 23/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for offshore waters between St Lawrence and Double Island Point. Strong Wind Warning has been cancelled between Bowen to St Lawrence. Strong Wind Warning has been cancelled for Hervey Bay. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for coastal areas between Sandy Cape and Point Danger from Saturday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina is situated off the central coast and moving slowly southeast. A high occurs near New Zealand and the combination of these two systems is generating strong winds about parts of the Queensland coast. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, developing about eastern coastal districts and extending south over the Darling Downs this afternoon and evening. Showers generally about the southeast coast with rain areas on the Sunshine coast and Fraser Coast with possible moderate to heavy falls. Fine over the interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds across the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the central coast, fresh to strong SE winds near Fraser Island. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the interior. Forecast for Saturday An upper level trough moves through the SE region with increasing showers and thunderstorms. Isolated showers developing in the afternoon about the central coastal and the northeast tropics. Showers and thunderstorms remaining over the northern tropics and about the Gulf region. Fine over the interior. Forecast for Sunday After the passage of the upper level trough instability decreases over the southeast region with no thunderstorms but isolated afternoon showers remaining. No change over the remainder of the state with thunderstorms continuing across the tropics, isolated afternoon showers persisting about eastern coastal districts. Strong SE winds remaining over a smaller zone near the Fraser Coast. Fine over the interior. Forecast for Monday A new surface trough enters the southwest of the state with late showers and thunderstorms near the southern border. No change over the tropics but fine conditions over the interior and the southeast region. Isolated afternoon showers persisting about the southern tropics north of St Lawrence. Forecast for Tuesday The inland trough progresses through the central interior and the southeast region. Increasing instability over Queensland in general will lead to showers and thunderstorms developing over most districts north and east of trough. Thunderstorm activity should also extend towards the east and southeast coast later in the day. Becoming fine over the southwest behind the trough. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The trough will progress north along the central coast, clearing the weather north. Eventually the thunderstorm activity will be confined to the tropics, fine over the interior. Fine at first for the southeast but isolated showers redeveloping about the exposed coast with time. Rain areas increasing near the Gulf coast later in the period. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
