Weather Situation
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina is situated off the central coast and moving slowly
southeast. A high occurs near New Zealand and the combination of these two
systems is generating strong winds about parts of the Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, developing about eastern
coastal districts and extending south over the Darling Downs this afternoon and
evening. Showers generally about the southeast coast with rain areas on the
Sunshine coast and Fraser Coast with possible moderate to heavy falls. Fine over
the interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds across the tropics. Moderate to
fresh SE winds about the central coast, fresh to strong SE winds near Fraser
Island. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
An upper level trough moves through the SE region with increasing showers and
thunderstorms. Isolated showers developing in the afternoon about the central
coastal and the northeast tropics. Showers and thunderstorms remaining over the
northern tropics and about the Gulf region. Fine over the interior.
Forecast for Sunday
After the passage of the upper level trough instability decreases over the
southeast region with no thunderstorms but isolated afternoon showers remaining.
No change over the remainder of the state with thunderstorms continuing across
the tropics, isolated afternoon showers persisting about eastern coastal
districts. Strong SE winds remaining over a smaller zone near the Fraser Coast.
Fine over the interior.
Forecast for Monday
A new surface trough enters the southwest of the state with late showers and
thunderstorms near the southern border. No change over the tropics but fine
conditions over the interior and the southeast region. Isolated afternoon
showers persisting about the southern tropics north of St Lawrence.
Forecast for Tuesday
The inland trough progresses through the central interior and the southeast
region. Increasing instability over Queensland in general will lead to showers
and thunderstorms developing over most districts north and east of trough.
Thunderstorm activity should also extend towards the east and southeast coast
later in the day. Becoming fine over the southwest behind the trough.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The trough will progress north along the central coast, clearing the weather
north. Eventually the thunderstorm activity will be confined to the tropics,
fine over the interior. Fine at first for the southeast but isolated showers
redeveloping about the exposed coast with time. Rain areas increasing near the
Gulf coast later in the period.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
