Weather Situation
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina is situated in the central Coral Sea and is moving
in a general southerly direction, remaining well offshore. A high situated near
New Zealand extends a ridge of high pressure along the Queensland east coast. A
surface trough lies through the interior of the state and will weaken during
Friday. An upper trough over western Queensland will move eastwards during
Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest of the
state, through the central interior and into the southern and southeast
interior. Fine in the far southwest. Isolated showers along most parts of the
east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore flow. Moderate to fresh SE to NE
winds in the east, light to moderate inland.
Forecast for Friday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over most parts of the eastern interior
and into the tropics. Showers and thunderstorms will tend scattered in the
southern and southeast interior, and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Isolated showers along the rest of east Queensland coast, although one or two
thunderstorms could make it to the east coast north of Mackay. Moderate SE winds
across most of the state, fresh to strong along southern parts of the east
coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper trough will move off the east coast very early with a deep
southerly flow stabilizing the atmosphere with a return to fine conditions in
western Queensland. The ridge of high pressure will persist about the east coast
with isolated coastal showers for most parts of the east coast. Showers will be
enhanced in the southeast with isolated thunderstorms inland as an unstable air
mass lingers.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough will continue to move further offshore with conditions
generally stabilizing over most of Queensland. A ridge will extend along the
east coast from a high near New Zealand. Most of the interior of the state
should be fine with only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent
inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Forecast for Monday
The high near New Zealand will continue to extend a ridge along the far
southern coast of Queensland. An upper trough looks likely to move over
southeastern Australia and should generate sufficient instability for isolated
showers and thunderstorms about the southern interior. The remainder of the
interior should be fine. Isolated showers about the east coast north of about
Mackay with showers and thunderstorms about the Peninsula and about the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The ridge of high pressure along the east coast will weaken during the
outlook period. The next upper trough is expected to develop over the southeast
of the state on Tuesday with a general increase in shower and thunderstorm
activity over most parts. By Wednesday and Thursday, most of the shower and
thunderstorm activity should have contracted to the east and north of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
