MELBOURNE - Dec 22/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Bowen and Double Island Point, including Hervey Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina is situated in the central Coral Sea and is moving in a general southerly direction, remaining well offshore. A high situated near New Zealand extends a ridge of high pressure along the Queensland east coast. A surface trough lies through the interior of the state and will weaken during Friday. An upper trough over western Queensland will move eastwards during Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest of the state, through the central interior and into the southern and southeast interior. Fine in the far southwest. Isolated showers along most parts of the east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore flow. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds in the east, light to moderate inland. Forecast for Friday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over most parts of the eastern interior and into the tropics. Showers and thunderstorms will tend scattered in the southern and southeast interior, and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Isolated showers along the rest of east Queensland coast, although one or two thunderstorms could make it to the east coast north of Mackay. Moderate SE winds across most of the state, fresh to strong along southern parts of the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The upper trough will move off the east coast very early with a deep southerly flow stabilizing the atmosphere with a return to fine conditions in western Queensland. The ridge of high pressure will persist about the east coast with isolated coastal showers for most parts of the east coast. Showers will be enhanced in the southeast with isolated thunderstorms inland as an unstable air mass lingers. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough will continue to move further offshore with conditions generally stabilizing over most of Queensland. A ridge will extend along the east coast from a high near New Zealand. Most of the interior of the state should be fine with only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Forecast for Monday The high near New Zealand will continue to extend a ridge along the far southern coast of Queensland. An upper trough looks likely to move over southeastern Australia and should generate sufficient instability for isolated showers and thunderstorms about the southern interior. The remainder of the interior should be fine. Isolated showers about the east coast north of about Mackay with showers and thunderstorms about the Peninsula and about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The ridge of high pressure along the east coast will weaken during the outlook period. The next upper trough is expected to develop over the southeast of the state on Tuesday with a general increase in shower and thunderstorm activity over most parts. By Wednesday and Thursday, most of the shower and thunderstorm activity should have contracted to the east and north of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
