MELBOURNE - Dec 22/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation A weak low pressure system off the NSW south coast will drift slowly southwards before weakening east of Tasmania on Friday. A large high pressure system over New Zealand will maintain a ridge westwards towards southern Tasmania until Saturday. A weak trough of low pressure will linger over inland Victoria on Thursday and Friday before deepening over western Victoria on Saturday. The trough will then move slowly eastwards across central Victoria on Christmas Day then clear from the east on Boxing Day. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayIsolated showers and thunderstorms about the eastern ranges, clearing later in the evening. Generally clear over western areas. Light and variable winds inland but moderate to fresh southeasterlies on the coast.Friday 23 DecemberLocal morning fogs in the south. Isolated showers and thunderstorms developing in the afternoon over central and eastern districts, mostly about the ranges. The risk of afternoon showers and thunderstorms extending to the Northern Country. Warm to hot with light and variable winds and fresh afternoon seabreezes along the coast.Fire Danger - High to very high in the west.Saturday 24 DecemberLocal early fogs in Gippsland. Scattered showers and local thunderstorms developing about the dividing range. The chance of local showers and thunderstorms over most other areas during the afternoon. Warm to hot and humid with light to moderate northeast to northwest wind and afternoon coastal seabreezes.Sunday 25 DecemberMild in the southwest with isolated showers. Warm to hot and humid elsewhere with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing, particularly central and eastern areas. Moderate to fresh north to northwest wind across the north and east but south to southwesterly winds in the southwest extending to central areas.Monday 26 DecemberScattered showers and local thunderstorms over the northeast, easing. Isolated showers in most other areas clearing from the west.
