Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 21/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high near New Zealand extends a ridge of high pressure along the Queensland
east coast. A trough lies through the interior of the state and will remain slow
moving tomorrow. An upper trough will intensify over western Queensland during
Thursday. A tropical low in the northwest Coral Sea will move slowly
south-southeast through the outlook period and remain well offshore. The
tropical low may develop further in the next 48 hours and the situation will be
monitored closely.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest to the
southeast interior, scattered in the southern interior. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms about the far northwest of the state and Cape York Peninsula.
Isolated showers along parts of the east coast, mainly north of Cardwell and
south of Gladstone. Patchy light rain in the far southwest late in the day.
Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds in the east, light to moderate inland.
Forecast for Thursday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest of the
state, through the central interior and into the southern and southeast
interior. Mostly fine in the far southwest after some early light rain. Isolated
showers along most parts of the east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore
flow.  Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds in the east, light to moderate inland.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough will move over eastern Queensland, with isolated showers and
thunderstorms developing over most parts of the eastern interior and into the
tropics. Showers and thunderstorms will tend scattered in the southern and
southeast interior, the eastern tropics and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
The New Zealand high will remain almost stationary and continue to extend a
ridge with isolated showers along most of east Queensland coast, although one or
two thunderstorms could make it to the east coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper trough will move off the east coast very early with a deep
southerly flow stabilizing the atmosphere with a return to fine conditions in
western Queensland. The ridge of high pressure will persist about the east coast
with isolated coastal showers for most parts of the east coast. Showers will be
enhanced in the southeast with isolated thunderstorms as an unstable air mass
lingers.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough will continue to move further offshore with conditions
generally stabilizing over most of Queensland. A ridge will extend along the
east coast from a high near New  Zealand. Most of the interior of the state
should be fine with only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent
inland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The ridge of high pressure along the east coast will weaken during the
outlook period. The next upper trough is expected to develop from the west
during the outlook period with a general increase in shower and thunderstorm
activity over most parts. By Wednesday, most of the activity should have
contracted to the east and north of the state.

Thursday.
