MELBOURNE - Dec 20/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high near New Zealand extends a ridge of high pressure along the Queensland
east coast. A trough in the far southwest of the state will move slowly
eastwards. A low situated southeast of Papua New Guinea is slow moving. The low
is expected to develop further over the next day or two, while remaining well
offshore and not affecting the Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms in a band from the northwest to the
southeast interior including the Peninsula, becoming scattered in the southern
interior. Isolated showers along parts of the east coast, and developing in the
afternoon about the southeast. Patchy light rain in the far southwest late in
the day. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds in the east, light to moderate
inland.
Forecast for Thursday
An amplifying upper level trough will enter western Queensland during the
day, increasing shower and thunderstorm activity over most parts of the interior
of the state. Apart from some early morning rain it will be fine in the far
southwest. The high near New Zealand will remain almost stationary and begin to
weaken, though it will continue to extend a ridge along the Queensland coast
with isolated coastal showers most parts of the coast. The low well offshore in
the Coral Sea may develop further while remaining slow moving.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough will move over eastern Queensland, with isolated showers and
thunderstorms developing over most parts of the eastern interior and into the
tropics. Showers and thunderstorms will tend scattered in the southern and
southeast interior, the eastern tropics, and along the Gulf coast. The New
Zealand high will remain almost stationary and continue to extend a ridge with
isolated showers along the rest of the east Queensland coast. The low well
offshore in the Coral Sea may develop further while remaining slow moving.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper trough will move off the east coast very early with a deep
southerly flow stabilizing the atmosphere and a return to fine conditions in
western Queensland. The ridge of higher pressure will persist about the east
coast with isolated coastal showers. Showers will be enhanced in the southeast
with isolated thunderstorms as an unstable air mass lingers. The low well
offshore in the Coral Sea will move to the southeast further away from the
Queensland coast.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The ridge of higher pressure along the east coast will weaken on Sunday as
the high near New Zealand moves to the southeast and weakens. Showers will
decrease along the east coast as the ridge weakens with only some enhanced
showers in the afternoon as an unstable air mass continues. Further inland, fine
weather will dominate as the stable southerly flow continues. Showers and
thunderstorms will increase in the northwestern tropics as winds turn more
northerly increasing moisture and instability. The next upper level trough will
approach southwestern parts of the state on Monday with increasing chances of
showers and thunderstorms. As the upper level trough pushes through the state on
Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms will develop throughout much of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
