Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge of higher pressure along
the Queensland east coast. A trough is approaching the western border from S.A.
A weak trough is moving northwards through the northern part of Cape York
Peninsula.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Patchy rain , showers and thunderstorms persisting over the western interior
and extending across southern districts. Becoming fine over the southwest of the
state. Thunderstorm activity reaching the western Darling Downs region this
afternoon. Some patchy rain also extending east across the southern interior to
the southeast coast  later i the day. Isolated showers about the east coast
generally. Fine over most of the eastern interior. Showers and thunderstorms
generally over the tropics with some moderate to heavy falls in the northern
tropics.
Forecast for Tuesday
An upper level trough clears the southeast coast and this will reduce
instability and thunderstorm activity over the interior as well as the
northwest. Isolated showers and thunderstorms generally over the interior in a
band from the northwest to the Darling Downs in the afternoon. Fine over the
greater southwest region. Thunderstorm activity also reducing over the tropics
but heavier falls remaining in the northern tropics. Showers about the east
coast decreasing. Isolated showers persisting over the southeast region.
Forecast for Wednesday
Much the same pattern across the state with a stalled surface trough across
the interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon in a band from
the northwest to the southeast interior. Patchy rain entering the Channel
Country as a new upper level trough approaches Queensland from the southwest. No
change in the weather in the tropics and eastern districts although the coastal
ridge intensifies as the southern high builds.
Forecast for Thursday
The next upper level trough enters western Queensland and intensifies
generating increased thunderstorm activity with rain areas over the central and
southern interior. Showers increase about the east coast generally as SE winds
freshen. A maximum in showers will occur on the northeast tropical coast due to
increased activity from the east. Over the southeast region isolated showers
remain with thunderstorms over the western Darling Downs.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The strong ridge of higher pressure persists about the east coast  with a
tropical low developing further east over the Coral Sea. The upper level trough
moving east and reaching the southeast coast on Friday with increased shower
intensity. Some thunderstorm activity remaining over the southern interior on
Friday but disappearing by Saturday. Becoming dry throughout the interior on
Saturday and Sunday. Showers decreasing about most of the east coast by Sunday
leaving showers and thunderstorms over the tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
