MELBOURNE - Dec 17/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high near Tasmania extends a ridge along the east coast of the continent. A broad area of low pressure lies over Central Australia, with a surface trough moving slowly east and expected over western Queensland on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers and thunderstorms through the west and north of the state, tending to thundery rain with some possible moderate falls in southwest. Some light rain areas over central and eastern Maranoa and Warrego district. Isolated showers along the east coast, becoming scattered with some rain areas north of about Cooktown with some moderate falls. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate NE to NW winds over most of the state, with moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast. Forecast for Sunday Scattered showers and thunderstorms through the west of the state, tending to thundery rain with some possible moderate falls in southwest. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the Peninsula, tending to rain areas about the east coast with some moderate falls possible. Some light rain areas over central and eastern Maranoa and Warrego district. Isolated showers along the east coast, becoming scattered with some rain areas north of about Cooktown. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate NE to NW winds over most of the state, with moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast. Forecast for Monday Remaining fine and mild over the central interior and most of the eastern districts except for some isolated showers about the southeast and along the east coast. Scattered showers and areas of thundery rain about the northeast coast north of about Cairns. A surface trough and some upper instability should trigger mainly isolated showers and storms over the western districts and the southern interior. Forecast for Tuesday Mainly isolated showers and storms over the western districts and the southern interior, contracting gradually out of the far southwest as the surface trough drifts to the east. A ridge along the east coast should maintain the fine and mild conditions over the central interior and most of the eastern districts, except for some isolated showers about the coast and southeast interior. The monsoon trough should remain over Torres Strait, leading to scattered showers and areas of thundery rain over the Peninsula district. Forecast for Wednesday Mainly isolated showers and storms over the western districts and the southern interior, though fine in the far southwest border regions. A ridge along the east coast should maintain the fine and mild conditions over the central interior and most of the eastern districts, except for some isolated showers about the coast. The monsoon trough should remain over Torres Strait, leading to scattered showers and areas of thundery rain over the Peninsula district. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday A weak ridge should persist along the east coast, maintaining the mostly fine conditions about the eastern districts south of Bowen, although isolated showers are likely. A surface trough should linger over the state's interior, producing showers and thunderstorms in a band stretching from the Gulf Country into the Central West and towards the southeast interior. The monsoon trough should remain near the Torres Strait region and is expected to continue producing scattered showers and thundery rain periods over the Peninsula district.
