MELBOURNE - Dec 16/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge occurs along the east coast of Queensland east coast from a high in the Great Australian Bight. A weak surface trough lies through the western interior. Forecast for the rest of Friday Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, isolated showers and thunderstorms developing over western districts later today. Isolated showers generally over eastern districts, fine over the interior of the southern tropics. More frequent showers about the northeast tropical coast with isolated thunderstorms. Light to moderate NW to NE winds across the interior and moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast. Forecast for Saturday An approaching upper level trough is expected to increase the thunderstorm activity over western districts with developing rain areas. Patchy rain developing and extending across the southern interior. The ridge should persist about the east coast with isolated showers, more frequent on the northeast tropical coast. Fine over the eastern interior. Thunderstorm activity also increasing over the tropics with developing rain areas. Light to moderate NW to NE winds over the tropics, moderate to fresh E to SE winds about the east coast. Moderate NE winds over the interior. A high fire danger over the central interior. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough slips away to the southeast of the continent. Thunderstorms activity continuing across the tropics and over western districts with rain areas. Patchy rain persisting across the southern interior into the western Darling Downs. Isolated showers remaining over eastern districts. Fine over most of the eastern interior. Forecast for Monday A new surface trough will clear the thunderstorm active out of the southwest and extend it further east across southern districts with rain areas. Rain areas now developing across the Darling Downs district. No change on the east coast with isolated showers, fine over most of the eastern interior. A monsoonal trough may start to appear over the northern tropics. Forecast for Tuesday Thunderstorm activity now extending into the Darling Downs with the movement of the trough. Fine over the southwest. Showers and thunderstorms extending northwest in a band from the Darling Downs to the Gulf region. Isolated showers about the east coast and fine inland north of about Emerald. No change in the tropics. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday A weak ridge should persist along the east coast, maintaining the mostly fine conditions about the eastern districts south of Bowen, although isolated showers are likely. A surface trough should linger over the state's interior, producing showers and thunderstorms in a band stretching from the Gulf Country into the Central West and down into the southeast of the state. The monsoon trough should remain near the Torres Strait region and is expected to continue producing scattered showers and thundery rain periods over the Peninsula district.
