MELBOURNE - Dec 16/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge extends along the southern and central Queensland east coast from a high in the Great Australian Bight. An upper trough will move east into central Australia, increasing instability through western Queensland. A surface trough lies through the western interior, linking to a weak low in the Northern Territory. Forecast for the rest of Friday Showers and thunderstorms through much of western Queensland and about the northern tropics. Isolated showers for most eastern districts after some early patchy rain clears. More frequent showers about the northeast tropical coast with isolated thunderstorms. Showers and possible thunderstorms about the Maranoa and Warrego and southwest Darling Downs. Light to moderate NW to NE winds across the interior and moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The upper trough is expected to move east over the Great Australian Bight and into southeast Australia late in the day, further increasing instability over western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms with rain areas are likely over western Queensland, with patchy rain extending from the west over the southern interior. The ridge should persist about the southern and central coast with only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland south of about Townsville. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern tropics and tend to rain at times. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough slips away to the southeast of the continent but a surface trough over southwest Queensland maintains instability in the west. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue about western Queensland and the southern interior as a result. Cloud and patchy rain will spread to the central and southeast interior. The ridge should persist about the east coast from a high in the Tasman Sea with isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland south of Cardwell. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern tropics and tend to rain at times as the monsoon trough forms to the north of the state . Forecast for Monday The weak ridge should persist along the east coast with isolated showers about eastern districts. Scattered showers and thundery rain periods should persist over the Peninsula district as the monsoon trough remains over the Torres Strait area. A surface trough should produce showers and thunderstorms over the western districts and the southern interior. Patchy rain will spread to the Darling Downs. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A weak ridge should persist along the east coast, maintaining the mostly fine conditions about the eastern districts south of Bowen, although isolated showers are likely. A surface trough should linger over the state's interior, producing showers and thunderstorms in a band stretching from the Gulf Country into the Central West and down into the southeast of the state. The monsoon trough should remain near the Torres Strait region and is expected to continue producing scattered showers and thundery rain periods over the Peninsula district.
