MELBOURNE - Dec 16/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A ridge extends along the southern and central Queensland east coast from a
high in the Great Australian Bight. An upper trough will move east into central
Australia, increasing instability through western Queensland. A surface trough
lies through the western interior, linking to a weak low in the Northern
Territory.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Showers and thunderstorms through much of western Queensland and about the
northern tropics. Isolated showers for most eastern districts after some early
patchy rain clears. More frequent showers about the northeast tropical coast
with isolated thunderstorms. Showers and possible thunderstorms about the
Maranoa and Warrego and southwest Darling Downs. Light to moderate NW to NE
winds across the interior and moderate to fresh SE winds about the east
coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper trough is expected to move east over the Great Australian Bight and
into southeast Australia late in the day, further increasing instability over
western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms with rain areas are likely over
western Queensland, with patchy rain extending from the west over the southern
interior. The ridge should persist about the southern and central coast with
only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland south of about
Townsville. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern tropics
and tend to rain at times.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough slips away to the southeast of the continent but a surface
trough over southwest Queensland maintains instability in the west. Showers and
thunderstorms are expected to continue about western Queensland and the southern
interior as a result. Cloud and patchy rain will spread to the central and
southeast interior. The ridge should persist about the east coast from a high in
the Tasman Sea with isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland
south of Cardwell. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern
tropics and tend to rain at times as the monsoon trough forms to the north of
the state .
Forecast for Monday
The weak ridge should persist along the east coast with isolated showers
about eastern districts. Scattered showers and thundery rain periods should
persist over the Peninsula district as the monsoon trough remains over the
Torres Strait area. A surface trough should produce showers and thunderstorms
over the western districts and the southern interior. Patchy rain will spread to
the Darling Downs.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A weak ridge should persist along the east coast, maintaining the mostly fine
conditions about the eastern districts south of Bowen, although isolated showers
are likely. A surface trough should linger over the state's interior, producing
showers and thunderstorms in a band stretching from the Gulf Country into the
Central West and down into the southeast of the state. The monsoon trough
should remain near the Torres Strait region and is expected to continue
producing scattered showers and thundery rain periods over the Peninsula
district.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
