web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A ridge extends along the southern and central Queensland east coast from a
high in the Great Australian Bight. A weak upper trough will move east across
the state today whilst a surface trough develops through the interior of the
state.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers over most eastern districts south of Bowen with scattered
showers and thunderstorms in the moist, unstable airmass north of Bowen.
Scattered showers also about the Wide Bay and Burnett district. Showers and
isolated gusty thunderstorms will develop over the southern and central
interior. Light to moderate NW to NE winds across the tropics, freshening SE
winds about the east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior.
A moderate to high fire danger over the eastern interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high will move slowly east to lie near Tasmania, maintaining and
strengthening the ridge along most of the east coast. Fresh SE winds are likely
to become strong about the central and southern tropical coast. A new upper
trough will move east into central Australia, increasing instability through
western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms expected. Showers and
thunderstorms will also continue in the unstable airmass in the northern
tropics. Isolated showers will occur over remaining eastern districts in the
moist onshore wind
Forecast for Saturday
The new upper trough is expected to move east over the Great Australian Bight
and into southeast Australia late in the day, further increasing instability in
western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms with rain areas are likely over
western Queensland, with patchy rain extending from the west over the southern
and southeast interior. The ridge should persist about the southern and central
coast with only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland south
of about Townsville. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern
tropics and tend to rain at times.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough slips away to the southeast of the continent but a surface
trough over southwest Queensland maintains instability in the west. Showers and
thunderstorms are expected to continue about western Queensland and the southern
interior as a result. Cloud and patchy rain will spread to the central and
southeast interior. The ridge should persist about the east coast from a high in
the Tasman Sea with isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland
south of Cardwell. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern
tropics and tend to rain at times.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The new trough system will most likely move slowly east over the interior on
Monday and Tuesday and into southeast districts on Wednesday. Shower and
thunderstorm activity will gradually extend east across the south of the state
through the outlook period, extending from the northwest to southeast by
Wednesday. Isolated showers are expected over remaining parts of the state with
a moist SE'ly flow persisting about the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms
will continue about the northern tropics throughout the outlook period.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
