MELBOURNE - Dec 15/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge extends along the southern and central Queensland east coast from a high in the Great Australian Bight. A weak upper trough will move east across the state today whilst a surface trough develops through the interior of the state. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Isolated showers over most eastern districts south of Bowen with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the moist, unstable airmass north of Bowen. Scattered showers also about the Wide Bay and Burnett district. Showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms will develop over the southern and central interior. Light to moderate NW to NE winds across the tropics, freshening SE winds about the east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. A moderate to high fire danger over the eastern interior. Forecast for Friday The high will move slowly east to lie near Tasmania, maintaining and strengthening the ridge along most of the east coast. Fresh SE winds are likely to become strong about the central and southern tropical coast. A new upper trough will move east into central Australia, increasing instability through western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms expected. Showers and thunderstorms will also continue in the unstable airmass in the northern tropics. Isolated showers will occur over remaining eastern districts in the moist onshore wind Forecast for Saturday The new upper trough is expected to move east over the Great Australian Bight and into southeast Australia late in the day, further increasing instability in western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms with rain areas are likely over western Queensland, with patchy rain extending from the west over the southern and southeast interior. The ridge should persist about the southern and central coast with only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland south of about Townsville. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern tropics and tend to rain at times. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough slips away to the southeast of the continent but a surface trough over southwest Queensland maintains instability in the west. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue about western Queensland and the southern interior as a result. Cloud and patchy rain will spread to the central and southeast interior. The ridge should persist about the east coast from a high in the Tasman Sea with isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland south of Cardwell. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern tropics and tend to rain at times. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The new trough system will most likely move slowly east over the interior on Monday and Tuesday and into southeast districts on Wednesday. Shower and thunderstorm activity will gradually extend east across the south of the state through the outlook period, extending from the northwest to southeast by Wednesday. Isolated showers are expected over remaining parts of the state with a moist SE'ly flow persisting about the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern tropics throughout the outlook period. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
