Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 13/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A ridge is building along the southern Queensland coast from a high in the
Great Australian Bight. An upper level trough lies over southeast districts and
will contract off the southeast coast overnight. Another weak upper trough will
move across the state on Wednesday. A moist and unstable airmass extends over
the northern tropics.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over eastern districts and the southern
Central Highlands. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics north of
about Cardwell to Normanton.  Fine over the remainder of the state. Light to
moderate NW to NE winds over the northern tropics. Mostly moderate SW to SE
winds elsewhere with sea breezes near the coast.
Forecast for Wednesday
Fresh SE'ly winds will develop south of about Cardwell due to the ridge
extending along the southern coast. Isolated showers will occur over eastern
districts south of about Bowen in the onshore wind flow, with possible isolated
afternoon thunderstorms inland. A moist, unstable airmass will persist elsewhere
north of about Bowen with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected. High
cloud will increase in the southwest though with no rain expected. Fine
conditions will occur over the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
The high in the Great Australian Bight will continue to extend a ridge along
much of the east Queensland coast, with fresh SE winds extending north towards
the Peninsula coast. Isolated showers will continue over eastern districts south
of Townsville in the moist onshore wind flow. Showers and thunderstorms will
persist in a moist, unstable airmass north of Townsville. A new upper trough
will most likely move across the interior of Queensland, increasing instability
with showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms developing over the southern and
central interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high will move slowly east to lie near Tasmania, maintaining a ridge and
fresh SE winds along much of the east Queensland coast. A new upper trough
system will move east into central Australia, increasing instability through
western Queensland with showers and thunderstorms expected. Showers and
thunderstorms will also continue in the unstable airmass in the northern
tropics. Isolated showers will occur over remaining eastern districts in the
moist onshore wind flow.
Forecast for Saturday
The new upper trough is expected to move east over the Great Australian Bight
and into southeast Australia late in the day, further increasing instability in
western Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms with rain areas are likely over
western Queensland with patchy rain extending from the west over the southern
and southeast interior. The ridge should persist about the southern and central
coast with only isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent inland south
of about Cardwell. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the northern
tropics.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Unstable conditions will persist over the tropics during the outlook period
with showers and thunderstorms expected. The new trough system will most likely
enter western Queensland on Sunday and move slowly east over the interior on
Monday and Tuesday. Instability will continue to focus near the trough through
western Queensland on Sunday, with widespread showers and thunderstorms west of
about Longreach. Shower activity will increase through the central and southeast
interior through the outlook period as the trough approaches, with possible
thunderstorms developing. Isolated showers are expected over remaining parts of
the state with a moist SE'ly flow persisting about the east coast.

Wednesday.
