Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 11/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers.
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters from Gladstone to Cape
Moreton, including Hervey Bay for Monday morning.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A moist and unstable airmass extends over much of the state ahead of a
surface trough that lies over the Channel Country. This trough will move east
over southern and central Queensland tonight and push off the far southeast
coast Monday morning. A low will most likely form on the trough off the far
southeast coast before moving rapidly southeast Monday afternoon and merging
with another low deepening off the New South Wales coast.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and northwest. Patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms over the northern and eastern Channel Country district,
clearing tonight. Showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls over the
remainder of the state, increasing to thundery rain with locally heavy falls
from the west during the evening [some thunderstorms will most likely be
severe]. Light to moderate NW to NE winds, fresh at times near the coast, ahead
of cool and gusty SW change extending east over western districts.
Forecast for Monday
Patchy rain and thunderstorms over the Central West district, clearing to the
northeast during the morning. Thundery rain areas with moderate to possibly
locally heavy falls over central and southeast districts, easing to isolated
showers and thunderstorms from the west during the morning. Showers and
thunderstorms over the tropics and far northwest, more widespread during the
afternoon and evening. Fine in the southwest. Moderate to fresh SW winds over
western districts. Moderate to fresh NW winds elsewhere ahead of a SW wind
change extending from the west during the day.
Forecast for Tuesday
The low off the New South Wales coast will most likely intensify rapidly and
move south southeast. A weak trough will extend from the low into southeastern
Queensland, with isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms on and
east of the Great Dividing Range. Fine conditions should extend through
remaining parts of the state south of about Richmond due to a drier W to SW wind
flow. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will persist in unstable conditions
north of Richmond, more widespread through the northern tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
A high will develop over the western Tasman Sea, extending a ridge and SE
winds over southern and central Queensland waters. Isolated showers will occur
over the east coast and adjacent inland south of about Cardwell in the onshore
wind flow, with possible isolated thunderstorms due to instability associated
with an upper level trough moving off the coast. A moist, unstable airmass will
persist elsewhere north of Cardwell with scattered showers and thunderstorms
expected. High cloud will increase over the far southwest with patchy light rain
developing late in the day.
Forecast for Thursday
The high over the western Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge and fresh SE'ly
wind over the southern and central Queensland coast, with isolated showers
continuing in the moist onshore wind flow. A new upper level trough will most
likely enter the southern interior, increasing instability with showers and
possible isolated thunderstorms developing. Conditions will remain unstable
though the northern tropics and northwest with showers and thunderstorms
expected.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Unstable conditions will persist over the tropics during the outlook period
with showers and thunderstorms expected. Cloud will increase over western
districts ahead of the next major trough system with showers and isolated
thunderstorms most likely increasing to thundery rain areas west of about
Longreach. Isolated showers are expected over remaining parts of the state, with
possible isolated thunderstorms inland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
