MELBOURNE - Dec 10/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood Warnings are current for various rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A moist and very unstable airmass extends over much of the state ahead of a trough that lies near the southwestern border. This trough will move east over the Queensland interior today and cause shower and thunderstorm activity to become widespread through central and southern parts of the state this afternoon and evening. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and northwest. Patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the Channel Country district, clearing to the east during the day. Showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls over the remainder of the state, increasing to thundery rain with locally heavy falls from the west during the afternoon and evening [some thunderstorms will most likely be severe]. Light to moderate NW to NE winds, fresh at times near the coast, ahead of cool and gusty SW change extending east over western districts. Forecast for Monday The trough will move east into central and southeast districts and contract off the southeast coast at night. A low will most likely develop on the trough off the New South Wales coast. Patchy rain and thunderstorms will clear the Central West district early morning as the trough progresses east. Thundery rain areas with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls will ease to isolated showers and possible thunderstorms from the west over central and southeast districts during the morning. A moist and unstable airmass will persist over the tropics and Central Coast district ahead of the trough, with shower and thunderstorm activity continuing. Forecast for Tuesday The low off the New South Wales coast will most likely intensify rapidly and move south southeast. A weak trough will extend from the low into far southeastern Queensland, with possible isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms near the southeastern border. Fine conditions should extend through remaining southeast parts and into central districts south of about Richmond due to a drier W to SW wind flow. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will persist in unstable conditions north of Richmond, more widespread through the northern tropics. Forecast for Wednesday A new upper level trough will move east over southeast districts, producing showers and possible isolated thunderstorms on and east of the Great Dividing Range. Unstable conditions will persist through the northern tropics in a moist NE'ly wind flow, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected. Isolated showers will occur over remaining parts of the east coast in an onshore wind flow, with possible isolated thunderstorms. High cloud will increase over the far southwest with patchy light rain developing. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday Unstable conditions will persist over the tropics during the outlook period with showers and thunderstorms expected. Cloud will increase over western districts ahead of the next major trough system with showers and isolated thunderstorms most likely increasing to thundery rain areas west of about Longreach from Friday. Isolated showers are expected over remaining parts of the state, with possible isolated thunderstorms inland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday.
