MELBOURNE - Dec 4/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding for people in the Central West district and parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego forecast districts, possibly also the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays districts. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Monday for coastal waters between Mackay and Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. Flood Warnings are current for the Moonie and Paroo rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation An upper trough will continue to approach the west of the state overnight and will enter the southwest of the state during Monday, inducing an area of low pressure over the central interior. A strong S to SE change will move through southeast and southern central waters during Monday, enhancing a significant surface trough on the southern tropical or Central Coast. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Rain areas and thunderstorms over northern and eastern districts north of about St Lawrence, and through the interior northwest of St George. Moderate to locally heavy falls are likely, particularly with thunderstorms. Fine over southeastern districts and about the southern border. Moderate SE to NE winds across most of the state, fresh at times about the Capricorn and Central coasts. Forecast for Monday Rain areas and thunderstorms will continue to extend over much of the tropics and central coast and through the interior. Widespread moderate falls are likely, with some locally heavy falls also expected, particularly with thunderstorms. Rain should gradually ease to showers near the western border as the trough moves further east. Cloudy conditions will occur over remaining parts of the state with patchy rain and isolated showers. Fresh to strong E to SE winds about the east coast south of Mackay. Cool to cold maximum temperatures are expected over much of the state. Forecast for Tuesday The upper trough should continue east across the southwest of the state. Fresh to strong E to SE winds should continue on the east coast between Mackay and Double Island Point as the coastal surface trough deepens further in response to the upper system. Showers should clear far western parts of the state early in the day as the upper trough moves east. Rain areas and thunderstorms will extend elsewhere over the interior and through the tropics and Central Coast with moderate to locally heavy falls expected. Patchy rain will occur over southeast districts and the Capricornia with possible isolated thunderstorms and moderate falls north of Brisbane. Cool to cold maximum temperatures are expected over much of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The upper level trough should continue to move east into the southeast of the state by the end of the day. The surface trough should weaken slightly and is likely to move further south to the Capricorn coast. Rain areas and thunderstorms should contract to areas southeast of about St Lawrence to Thargomindah with some moderate to locally heavy falls possible. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue about the central coast and eastern tropics. Isolated showers are expected through the southern interior in the wake of the rain band. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere over western districts and through the Gulf Country. Cool to cold maximum temperatures are expected over much of the state. Forecast for Thursday Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the upper level trough, however at this stage it will most likely contract off the southeast and Capricorn coasts early on Thursday. Rain areas and thunderstorms should gradually clear the southeast coast during the day and conditions should generally stabilise across most of the state with only isolated showers and thunderstorms possibly continuing over remaining eastern districts. The next upper trough will begin to approach the southwest of the state late in the day with patchy rain developing in the far southwest. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday Conditions will most likely remain unsettled during the outlook period due to the next upper trough moving east across the south of the state on Friday and Saturday, before moving off the east coast on Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms should occur over the tropics, southern and central districts ahead of this trough. Showers and thunderstorms should contract to eastern districts on Sunday with fine conditions over most of the interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
