MELBOURNE - Nov 30/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for various districts. A fire weather warning is current for the Channel Country. A strong wind warning has been issued for Thursday for southeast Queensland waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A broad upper level trough lies over Central Australia while a surface trough is located about the southwest of the state, moving east and reaching eastern districts on Thursday. A southerly wind change will move through the southeast coast during Thursday afternoon and evening. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms from the northwest to the southern interior of the state, spreading to thundery rain areas with some moderate to possibly heavy local falls about the Warrego region. More isolated showers and storms over much of the remainder of the state, though mostly fine over the southeast with only isolated showers nearer the coast. Showers tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state. Drier, gusty southerly winds spreading across the Channel Country, resulting in severe to locally extreme fire dangers in relatively dry parts of the district. Forecast for Thursday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southern and southeast interior, spreading to thundery rain areas with some moderate to possibly heavy local falls about the Darling Downs and southern Central Highlands and Coalfields. More isolated showers and storms over the northern half of the state, with isolated to scattered showers near the coast. Fine in the southwest, though gusty with severe to locally extreme fire dangers through the Channel Country. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most parts of the state, but fresh and gusty S to SE winds in the far southwest, and developing about the southeast coast during the afternoon and evening. Forecast for Friday The surface trough should remain over the eastern tropical districts, while the southerly change will extend northwards to St. Lawrence by the evening. Early showers and rain areas about the southeast coast will clear, with the most active showers and thunderstorms expected near the trough through the central interior. Some moderate to heavy local falls may occur in this region. More isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern and eastern tropics, and remaining dry across the west and south of the state. Relatively cool over southern districts. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough is expected to extend inland by a ridge along the east coast of the continent. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and the state's central west. Fine conditions expected over southern districts, apart from some very isolated coastal showers. A strong high near Tasmania will maintain fresh to strong southerly winds along the southeast and central coasts. Forecast for Sunday The surface trough is expected to remain through the central interior of the state, with an increasing moist easterly airflow into the eastern tropics. An upper trough from the west will cause scattered showers and thunderstorms through the northern and central interior regions of the state. Fine in the far southwest and through much of the southeast, though some isolated coastal showers expected. Fresh to strong south to southeast winds along the southern and central coasts. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The upper trough will approach Queensland on Monday, and through the state during the middle of the week. Scattered showers and thunderstorms expected through the northern and eastern districts, more isolated in the south and west. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
