Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland.
A broad upper level trough lies over Central Australia while a surface trough is
moving eastwards across the Channel Country.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers and storms over the Channel Country and southern interior,
spreading to thundery rain areas with some moderate to possibly heavy local
falls about the Warrego region. More isolated showers and storms over much of
the remainder of the state, though mainly fine over the southeast with only a
few isolated showers. More widespread showers and isolated storms also along
the northeast coast between Cooktown and Townsville. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds over most of the state. Drier, gusty southerly winds spreading across the
Channel Country during the day, resulting in severe fire dangers in relatively
dry parts of the district.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface trough will move eastwards, contracting its showers, storms and
thundery rain areas eastwards out of the southern interior during the morning.
The trough should reach the eastern interior during the afternoon, causing
mainly isolated showers and storms over the northern and eastern tropics, and
more widespread showers and storms over state's southeast. These showers and
storms should spread to thundery rain areas over the southern interior, with
moderate to possibly heavy local falls possible over the Darling Downs. A cooler
southerly wind change will northwards up the southeast coast during the
afternoon. Dry over western Queensland.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough should remain over the eastern tropical districts, while
the southerly change will extend northwards to St. Lawrence by the evening.
Early showers and rain areas over the southeast and southeast interior should
clear to a mainly fine day, while the most active showers and storms will be
centred near the trough over the Central Highlands, where some moderate to heavy
local falls may occur. More isolated showers and storms over the northern and
eastern tropics, and remaining dry across the west and south of the state.
Relatively cool over the southern districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough should get pushed inland by a ridge along the east coast
of the continent. Mainly isolated showers and storms over the northern tropics
and the state's central west, and remaining mainly fine over the southern
districts and the east coastal areas south of about St. Lawrence. A strong high
near Tasmania will maintain fresh to strong southerly winds along the southeast
and central coasts.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Another upper trough will approach Queensland on Sunday, causing storms to
increase over the state's interior, and for the activity to also spread
southwards into the Maranoa and Warrego region. The fresh onshore flow may also
allow showers to become more frequent early in the new week about the central
and northeast coasts and nearby inland areas. Showers and storms gradually
contracting eastwards on Tuesday as the upper trough moves across the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
