Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 24/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A moist wind flow will continue to feed into a slow moving inland surface
trough that extends from the northwest of the state into the Maranoa. A coastal
trough will weaken over southern Queensland waters early Friday. An upper level
low to the southwest of the state will move slowly southeast on Friday,
maintaining a thundery rain band through much of the central and southern
interior.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
A cloud band with rain and thunderstorms extends from the central interior
through the Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.
Widespread moderate falls with some localised heavy falls within the band
through areas east of about Longreach to Charleville. Patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms through the northwest of the state. Mostly fine elsewhere in the
west with only isolated showers over the eastern Channel Country. Patchy rain
and isolated thunderstorms over the Southeast Coast district and southern Wide
Bay and Burnett with some moderate to possible heavy falls with thunderstorms
north of Brisbane. Showers and isolated thunderstorms through the northern
tropics and southern tropical interior. More isolated shower and thunderstorm
activity elsewhere over eastern Queensland. Mostly moderate S'ly winds over the
far southern coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere over eastern
districts. Moderate SW to SE winds in the far west, tending moist NW to NE
elsewhere over the interior.
Forecast for Friday
Fine in the southwest. Patchy rain clearing the Northwest district in the
afternoon. Cloudy conditions with rain and thunderstorms elsewhere over western
districts and through the western Darling Downs and southern Central Highlands.
Some moderate to locally heavy falls remain likely. Patchy rain elsewhere over
the southeastern and central interior with possible isolated thunderstorms.
Early patchy rain over the southeast coast, decreasing to isolated showers
during the morning. Isolated showers over the east tropical coast, more frequent
during the morning with possible isolated thunderstorms. Mostly fine over the
Central and Capricorn coasts with only isolated showers. Cool maximum
temperatures over western districts and the southeastern and southern central
interior. Moderate SE to NE winds over the east coast, fresh at times. Moderate
to fresh SW to SE winds in the west. Light to moderate NW to NE winds elsewhere
over the interior. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country district.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper level system will move southeast over southeastern Australia. The
thundery rain band should therefore weaken and contract east over southeastern
districts and the central interior of Queensland, most likely reaching the
southeast coast by the afternoon. Some moderate falls remain possible with
thunderstorms. Isolated showers are expected along the Wide Bay and central
coasts ahead of the rain band. Instability should decrease through northeast
tropics with only isolated showers expected. Showers and thunderstorms will
continue through the Gulf Country and northern interior, with more isolated
activity expected through the Peninsula. Fine conditions will occur south and
west of Longreach.
Forecast for Sunday
A deep ridge should develop over the northeast of the state with only
isolated showers expected. Unstable conditions will persist over the far
northwest with showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. The upper level low
will most likely contract east off the Victorian coast into the Tasman Sea. The
patchy, thundery rain band over southeastern and central districts will
therefore weaken further into shower and isolated thunderstorm activity and
contract northeast to be north of about Richmond to Fraser Island. Fine
conditions are expected elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
A new upper level trough will most likely move east over the interior of the
state, increasing instability and producing showers and isolated thunderstorms
over the northwest and central interior. Isolated showers will occur over the
east coast and adjacent inland in a moist onshore wind flow. These showers may
be further enhanced over the central, Wide Bay and north Peninsula coasts with
possible isolated thunderstorms due to a trough moving west over the Coral Sea.
Fine conditions will continue in the southwest and far southern interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The new upper trough will most likely move through eastern Queensland on
Tuesday and combine with moist NE'ly winds to generate rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms through central and southeast parts of the state. The focus for
rain and thunderstorm activity should then shift into the southern and central
interior on Wednesday as a new trough enters the state. This trough will most
likely move east on Thursday, extending the rain and thunderstorm activity
through central and southeast districts. Conditions will remain generally
unstable through the northern tropics with isolated showers and thunderstorms,
possibly becoming more widespread from Thursday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
